David Bowie reveals creepy Blackstar short film inspired by Popeye: See the scariest moments in gifs
Scarecrows, a bejeweled skull and Bowie with buttons for eyes - the 10-minute epic is haunting
David Bowie has returned in a big way with his ambitious, haunting and totally cinematic short film Blackstar.
The 10-minute epic is a statement of intent for the iconic singer, who has recalled the spirit of Bohemian Rhapsody by choosing such a unique track as the lead single for his new album.
Just like Queen's classic combined a rock opera progression with an innovative music video, Bowie has taken it to a whole new level - and even brought a Popeye influence, according to Billboard.
Speaking at the premiere screening at the Nitehawk theatre in Brooklyn, the film's director Johan Renck revealed that the star wanted background characters in the video to recall the 1930s cartoon.
As a big fan of the movements of Max Fliescher's family favourite - which saw the periphery characters repeat the same three-second animations for a longer period of time - the singer wanted the same style used here.
The overall effect is one recalling fantasy thrillers like Pans Labrinth, with the title track from Bowie's upcoming album providing the perfect soundtrack.
Here are some of the creepiest moments from the video, in full gif glory - be sure to watch the full film at the top of the page.

David Bowie’s new song Blackstar: Five things you need to know, including his Popeye inspiration and the Major Tom theory
The visionary musician has made a mind-blowing return with his new single and video
No, really. Speaking at the video’s premiere in Brooklyn, Renck said that Bowie wanted to mimic the jumpy movement of old hand-drawn cartoons. “David sent me a YouTube clip from a very old cartoon, I think it was Popeye,” he said. “With those early-days animations, they sort of drew frame by frame on top of the film. So what happened is the characters would be like [mimics jerky movement]. David said, 'I'd like something like this.'"
