The band name originates from Marcus Mumford being the most visible member, organizing the band and their performances. Lovett indicated that the name was meant to evoke the sense of an "antiquated family business name".[8]
Mumford was born on 31 January 1987 in Yorba Linda, California, to English parents, John and Eleanor (née Weir-Breen) Mumford,[3] former national leaders of the Vineyard Church (UK and Ireland).[4][5] As a result, he has held both British and US citizenship from birth. Mumford has an older brother, James.[6] Mumford's family moved back to the UK when Marcus was six months old.[5] He grew up in Wimbledon Chase, southwest London, and was educated at King's College School in Wimbledon, where he met future band member Ben Lovett.[7][8] He returned to London to focus on his music career after his first year of study at the University of Edinburgh, where he collaborated on Mumford & Sons' debut album, Sigh No More.

After visiting John Wimber in the US, the Mumfords returned to the UK to establish the first British Vineyard church, South West London Vineyard in 1987. VCUKI became its own national organisation in 1996, when it was released by the international body.
