Silvana López Moreira Bó (born 31 January 1974) is the current First Lady of Paraguay since 15 August 2018, due to her marriage to President Mario Abdo Benítez. With López Moreira, the office of First Lady was reopened in Paraguay after a vacant period, since the previous President, Horacio Cartes, ordered its closure due to being divorced.[1]

Silvana López Moreira comes from a wealthy family, daughter of Néstor López Moreira and Rossana Bó.[2] López Moreira's maternal grandfather is businessman Nicolás Bó, who amassed his fortune during the regime of the late Paraguayan dictator Alfredo Stroessner, and owned media companies and various other businesses.[2][3][4] López Moreira's first cousin, model Gabriela Bó, had a brief marriage with Mexican singer Cristian Castro.[2]

López Moreira's first marriage was to wealthy cattle rancher José Félix Ugarte (circa 1990s), with whom she had three children, two sons and a daughter.[2][3][4] She later married politician and later President of Paraguay Mario Abdo Benítez, who was her teenage sweetheart when both attended the San Andrés High School in Asunción, with whom she has a son.[2][3][4]

In the aftermath of the Surfside condominium building collapse, the Ministry of External Relations stated that it was unable to locate López Moreira's sister, her sister's husband, and their three children and considered them to be missing.[5]

Mario Abdo Benítez (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈma.ɾjo ˈaβ.ðo βeˈni.tes]; born 10 November 1971), nicknamed "Marito",[1][2] is a Paraguayan politician who is the current President of Paraguay.[3] He was previously a senator and President of the Senate.[4]

Abdo Benítez was born in Asunción on 10 November 1971 and is the son of Ruth Benítez Perrier and Mario Abdo Benítez Sr.[5][6] His father's ancestry is Lebanese.[7][8]

At 16 years old, Abdo Benítez moved to the United States.[9] He then completed his university studies at Teikyo Post University in Waterbury, Connecticut, obtaining a degree in marketing.[2] Upon completion of his secondary schooling in 1989 he joined the Paraguayan Armed Forces, obtaining the rank of Second Lieutenant of Reserve Aviation and in turn was appointed by the Air Force Command as a paratrooper.[2]

Early political career

His first steps in politics were in 2005 as a member of the Republican National Reconstruction movement.[2] He was later a member of the Peace and Progress movement and won the Vice Presidency of the Colorado Party in 2005.[2] In June 2015, he was elected president of the Senate of Paraguay.[4][2][10]

Abdo Benítez has faced criticism for his relationship with the military dictatorship of Alfredo Stroessner, as his father was Stroessner's private secretary.[3][11][12] When Stroessner died in 2006, Abdo Benítez was one of the pallbearers at his funeral in Brasília, and Abdo Benítez later proposed that the Governing Board of the Colorado Party pay tribute to Stroessner.[11] The fortune Abdo Benítez owns was inherited from his father, who after the fall of the dictatorship was prosecuted for illicit enrichment, but the case was eventually dismissed.[11] Abdo Benítez has stated that while he believes that Stroessner "did a lot for the country", he also clarified that he does not condone the violations of human rights, torture and persecution committed during the regime.[11][13][14]

Alfredo Stroessner Matiauda (Spanish: [alˈfɾeðo estɾozˈneɾ]; 3 November 1912 – 16 August 2006) was a Paraguayan Army officer who was the dictator of Paraguay from 1954 to 1989. He ascended to the position after leading an army coup in 1954. His 35-year-long rule, marked by an uninterrupted period of repression in his country, is the longest in modern South American history.

In 1954, he ousted Federico Chávez, becoming president after winning an election in which he was the sole candidate. As an anti-communist, Stroessner had the backing of the United States for most of his time in power. His supporters packed the legislature and ran the courts, and he ruthlessly suppressed all opposition. He kept his country in what he called a constant "state of siege" that overruled civil liberties, enforced a cult of personality, and tortured and killed political opponents. Membership in his Colorado Party was a prerequisite for job promotion, free medical care and other services. The constitution had to be modified in 1967 and 1977 to legitimize his six consecutive elections to the presidency. Stroessner provided exile for Nazi war criminals (including Josef Mengele) as well as overthrown dictators, such as Nicaragua's Anastasio Somoza Debayle (later assassinated in Paraguay).

In 1988, he won an unprecedented eighth term on a majority, according to official figures, of over 89 percent of the registered vote. Less than a year later, he was overthrown in a military coup d'état led by his former confidant, General Andrés Rodríguez, and forced into exile in Brazil, where he spent the last 17 years of his life. Following a bout of pneumonia, he tried to return to his homeland to die, but was rejected by the government. He died in Brasília on August 16, 2006, of complications from a hernia operation.

Josef Mengele ([ˈjoːzɛf ˈmɛŋələ] (About this soundlisten); 16 March 1911 – 7 February 1979), also known as the Angel of Death (German: Todesengel),[1] was a German Schutzstaffel (SS) officer and physician during World War II. He is mainly remembered for his actions at the Auschwitz concentration camp, where he performed deadly experiments on prisoners, and was a member of the team of doctors who selected victims to be killed in the gas chambers[a] and was one of the doctors who administered the gas. With Red Army troops sweeping through Poland, Mengele was transferred 280 kilometres (170 mi) from Auschwitz to the Gross-Rosen concentration camp on 17 January 1945, ten days before the arrival of the Soviet forces at Auschwitz.

Before the war, Mengele had received doctorates in anthropology and medicine, and began a career as a researcher. He joined the Nazi Party in 1937 and the SS in 1938. He was assigned as a battalion medical officer at the start of World War II, then transferred to the Nazi concentration camps service in early 1943 and assigned to Auschwitz, where he saw the opportunity to conduct genetic research on human subjects. His experiments focused primarily on twins, with no regard for the health or safety of the victims.[3][4]

After the war, Mengele fled to South America. He sailed to Argentina in July 1949, assisted by a network of former SS members. He initially lived in and around Buenos Aires, then fled to Paraguay in 1959 and Brazil in 1960, all the while being sought by West Germany, Israel, and Nazi hunters such as Simon Wiesenthal, who wanted to bring him to trial. Mengele eluded capture in spite of extradition requests by the West German government and clandestine operations by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad. He drowned in 1979 after suffering a stroke while swimming off the coast of Bertioga, and was buried under the false name of Wolfgang Gerhard.[2] His remains were disinterred and positively identified by forensic examination in 1985.
