Donald Elias Zilkha (born 1950/1951) is an American financier, the co-founder and managing partner of Sciens Venture Partners.
Donald Zilkha is the son of Ezra Zilkha. He received a bachelor's degree in economics, philosophy and history from Wesleyan University in 1973.[1]In 1994, he bought 85% of Colt's Manufacturing Company, the American firearms manufacturer, for $27 million, and became the company's chairman.[2][3]Zilkha is the co-founder and managing partner of Sciens Venture Partners.[1]
Ezra Khedouri Zilkha (born 1925/1926) is an Iraqi-born American financier and philanthropist.
Ezra Zilkha was born in Baghdad, the son of the banker Khedouri Zilkha.[2] He grew up in Baghdad, Beirut, Cairo, and New York City.[2]
Khedouri Aboody Zilkha (1884–1956) was an Iraqi-Jewish banker.
Khedouri Zilkha was born in Baghdad in 1884[1] (or 1886),[2] the only son of the textile merchant Aboudi Zilkha[1] (1862–1904).[citation needed]He started as a banker in Baghdad in 1902, founding Zilkha Bank, and gradually expanded to Beirut (Banque Zilkha), Damascus, Cairo, Alexandria, Geneva, New York, Paris and the Far East.[1][2]In 1941[3] or 1942, he emigrated to New York and died there in 1956.[2]His son Ezra established in his father's memory the Khedouri Zilkha Fund for the Study of the History of Jewish Civilization in the Near East at Princeton University.[5] The fund supports a professorship, the current holder of which is Abraham Udovitch.[6]
Abraham Labe Udovitch (born 31 May 1933) is Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization in the Near East, Emeritus, and Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Emeritus, both at Princeton University.
Abraham Labe Udovitch was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1933. He received his B.S. from Columbia University in 1958 and his M.A. in 1959. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1965.[1]Udovitch taught at Brandeis University and at Cornell University before joining Princeton University in 1968. He is Khedouri A. Zilkha Professor of Jewish Civilization, in the Near East, Emeritus, and Professor of Near Eastern Studies, Emeritus, both at Princeton.[1][2] The former chair is funded by the Khedouri Zilkha Fund for the Study of the History of Jewish Civilization in the Near East established by Ezra Zilkha in memory of his father Khedouri Zilkha.[3]He is co-editor of the journal Studia Islamica and was associate editor of the Dictionary of the Middle Ages, prepared for the American Council of Learned Societies. Since 1978, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Encyclopaedia of Islam.
Udovitch is a member of the World Executive Committee of the International Center for Peace in the Middle East.
In 2010, Brill published Histories of the Middle East: Studies in Middle Eastern society, economy and law in honor of A.L. Udovitch, edited by Roxani Eleni Margariti, Adam Sabra, and Petra M. Sijpesteijn.[4]
Studia Islamica is an academic journal of Islamic studies focusing on the history, religion, law, literature, and language of the Muslim world, primarily Southwest Asian and Mediterranean lands. The editors-in-chief are A. L. Udovitch (Princeton University) and Houari Touati (School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences). It was established in 1953 and is published biannually.
