Anarchism and religion - Wikipedia The Quaker church, or the Religious Society of Friends, is organized along anarchist lines. All decisions are made locally in a community of equals where every members voice has equal weight. While there are no formal linkages between Quakerism and anarchism and Quakers as a whole hold a wide variety of political opinions, the long tradition of Quaker involvement in social-justice work and similar outlooks on how power should be structured and decisions should be reached has led to significant crossover in membership and influence between Christian anarchists and Quakers. The Quaker influence was particularly pronounced in the anti-nuclear movement of the 1980s and in the North American anti-globalization movement, both of which included many thousands of anarchists and self-consciously adopted secular, consensus-based aspects of Quaker decision making.

These are great thoughts of great men, but I want also to give you something from myself.” (They sat very still and attentive and there was an electric quality in the silence. They were very different from American students, who begin to squirm and think of something else whenever there is any threat of preaching. The Japanese, on the other hand, like homilies from their teachers; they even ask for them.) “I want you to try always to think for yourselves. Don’t believe everything you hear, no matter who says it. Don’t believe all you read in the newspaper. Don’t take other people’s opinions without examining them. Try to find out the truth for yourselves. If you hear a very strong opinion on one side of a question, try to hear also an opinion on the other side, and then decide what you think yourself. In thee days there is a great deal of propaganda of all kinds. Some of it is true and some is not. It is very important that young people all over the world should learn to find out the truth for themselves.” Then I wrote “Think for yourselves!” on the blackboard and we spent the last few minutes playing a word game.
books.google Japan Report 1959 · Industries A Nation's Congratulations To the Crown Prince and Princess: Congratulations on your wedding. The joy of the Emperor and Empress at this event must indeed by beyond measure. But, as our thoughts move into the future, when the Imperial couple ascends the throne, we are filled with solemn feelings even as the entire nation rejoices.
Last year, everyone was surprised at the courage and determination with which the Crown Prince chose a commoner for his bride. The younger generation felt encouraged by this act and thus was drawn into an even greater intimacy and sympathy with its prince, who so admirably followed the affectionate advice of Mrs. Elizabeth Vining, "Think for yourself." Today, all people believe this is a good thing and look with fear and hatred upon all measures that would turn back the clock. We pray that thoughtless people will not separate the young couple from the people, but rather that wise and understanding attendants will do their best to see there will be no such interference or complusion.
The Crown Prince and Princess are determined to meet with courage the many problems they will face in the future. We trust the prince is well aware that, upon becoming Emperor, he will be the symbol of Japan as well as of the unity of the people and that his main concern should be to become a true national symbol, not in form alone, but in everything.
Finally, we believe the Imperial couple will overcome all the vexatious restrictions of court traditions by keeping separate their public and private lives. This will bring them an ever richer life for their own sake alone.
A new era began in the Imperial Family when the Emperor withdrew from the affairs of state, became a "symbol" of the nation and renounced his "divinity." Today's wedding will be remembered as another forward step in the annals of the Imperial Household.
We pray for the everlasting health and happiness of the Crown Prince and Princess.

While it may have been true that the emperor directly spoke to Stoddard....While such reasons may have been true, there was also another reason why the imperial advisers preferred a Quaker, and based on several sources, the religious denomination of the new tutor was, in fact, one of the major factors that led to the imperial household’s decision to hire Vining. According to Maeda Yōichi, son of Maeda Tamon and the crown prince’s French tutor, a Quaker woman was considered most ideal because Quakers are pacifistic but not self-righteous or preachy. Japanese officials also found Quakerism ideal because it was understood, among Christian religions, as most compatible with the oriental world (where different religions had long co-existed) and therefore a Quaker would not force conversion.112 Likewise, Ishida Toshi, who was once the head of the Friends School in Tokyo, shared similar ideas as Maeda that a Quaker woman was chosen because Quakerism is not exclusive, but respects people of other religions and cultures, and its primary purpose is not to increase its number of believers. 61 ページ·395 KB

Dr. Inazo Nitobe, who was one of the secretaries at the League of Nations for eight years, was the speaker of the afternoon. His talk was truly along the Bahá'í lines and was inspired. He told how international congresses had come into vogue since the year 1840, and how they have increased steadily in numbers ever since then. I wished his talk could be used for our Star of the West, and asked him if he would not write it for us, but he said he could not. He told me that in Geneva he had met some of the Bahá'ís, Lady Bloomfield, Mountfort Mills, Mrs. White. He is a Quaker and his wife an American, and they stand for better understanding between the nations. Last year Dr. Masujima had a party in his garden and gave a talk on the Bahá'í Teachings, which was afterwards published here. I am told by a Japanese friend that it was very good indeed. So we can see how seeds sown in the West often bear fruit in the East.

Anarchism and religion - Wikipedia
The Quaker church, or the Religious Society of Friends, is organized along anarchist lines.

Elizabeth Gray Vining Selected as Tutor for Japanese Crown Prince
At the request of George D. Stoddard, chairman of the United States Education Mission which visited Japan in March, Assistant Secretary William Benton disclosed on August 26 that Mrs. Elizabeth Gray Vining of Philadelphia, Pa., ha: been selected by Dr. Stoddard as tutor for the Crown Prince of Japan.
Dr. Stoddard, who is now president of the University of Illinois, was asked by the Emperor of Japan to find a suitable tutor for the Crown Prince. The request was made during the Commission's audience with the Emperor. The Commission had been named by Mr. Benton, at the request of the War Department and of General MacArthur, to assist in the revision of the Japanese educational system.
In addition to the private instruction of the Crown Prince, Dr. Stoddard states that Mrs. Vining's duties will include instruction at the Peers School, which the Crown Prince attends as an ordinary student in the Middle School Department.

Windows for the Crown Prince - Gender, Class, and Race in Occupied Japan
This is perhaps a good place to say two things. ... It is very important that young people all over the world should learn to find out the truth for themselves.”
Then I wrote “Think for yourselves!” on the blackboard and we spent the last few minutes playing a word game.
“Think for yourselves!”

A Nation's Congratulations To the Crown Prince and Princess: Congratulations on your wedding.

Under Stalin, Friends were able to make formal visits to the Soviet Union in 1930, 1948 and 1949; otherwise contacts were limited to a few unusual and energetic individuals. After World War II, from 1950 onwards, the British Friends' East-West Committee and the American Friends' Service Committee tried to expand links, with some success, especially under Khrushchev. With the advent of Perestroika contact became easier.

Chocolate Wars: The 150-Year Rivalry Between the World's Greatest Chocolate Makers | Cadbury, Deborah
In the early nineteenth century the major English chocolate firms -- Fry, Rowntree, and Cadbury -- were all Quaker family enterprises that aimed to do well by doing good. The English chocolatiers introduced the world's first chocolate bar and ever fancier chocolate temptations -- while also writing groundbreaking papers on poverty, publishing authoritative studies of the Bible, and campaigning against human rights abuses. Chocolate was always a global business, and in the global competitors, especially the Swiss and the Americans Hershey and Mars, the Quaker capitalists met their match.

1 — Vining, came to the imperial household at the invitation of ...

How British Gun Manufacturers Changed the Industrial World Lock, Stock and Barrel By Lorraine Boissoneault | Center for South Asia
2018/05/18 — In 'Empire of Guns,' historian Priya Satia explores the microcosm of firearm manufacturing through an unlikely subject—a Quaker family.
