「アフリカの王子」挑戦始まる
ゾウやサイなど、アフリカの野生動物の密猟撲滅と保護を率先して訴えるウィリアム王子は、「アフリカの王子」とも呼ばれる。日本に次いで訪問する中国は、密猟者たちがとった装飾品用の象牙や、漢方薬の原料になるサイの角の一大消費地だ。
中国側の協力なしに密猟を撲滅するのは難しい。王子は今回、中国南部の雲南省を訪れ、野生のアジアゾウの保護に当たる人たちと交流する。
野生動物の鳴き声をアイフォーンで聞き、アフリカの大地に思いをはせるのがストレス解消法だ。録音した動物や昆虫の種類は実に数百に上る。大地を疾走するバファローの群れや、草むらのコウロギ、イモリの鳴き声を聞いていると、アフリカ大草原に一瞬で移動したような気になり、心が楽になるという。
10代で初めてアフリカを旅して、ケニア山の頂で将来の妃となるキャサリンさんにプロポーズしたことでも知られる。野生動物の密猟には憤りを感じるが、「克服できる希望がある。諦めない」と話す。
王子は、英国に多くの変革をもたらした歴代のジョージ王にちなみ、長男を「ジョージ」と命名した。将来、息子にアフリカの野生動物保護の重要性を教えたいと考えている。

ウィリアム王子は東日本大震災と原発事故からの復興への祈りを込めた記念植樹で、オーク（ヨーロッパナラ）を一緒に植えた本宮市白岩の橘明香さん（３７）、次男雅翔君（１１）＝白岩小５年＝、長女結花さん（１０）＝同小４年＝に語り掛けた。王位を継ぐ順位は父チャールズ皇太子に継ぐ第２位。王子は気さくに「寒い中、待っててくれてありがとう」と橘さん親子を気遣った。
王子に白い手袋を手渡した雅翔君は「緊張したけど、とても優しかった」と喜んだ。故ダイアナ元妃の長男で、英国で絶大な人気を誇る王子に間近で接した結花さんは「格好良かった」とはにかんだ。
植樹した屋外遊び場は、原発事故により屋外で遊ぶ機会が減っている子どもの運動不足を解消しようと市が整備した。橘さん親子は昨年１２月の開所以来、何度も遊びに訪れている。母の明香さんは「今ではこうして屋外で元気に遊べるようになった。福島が復興する姿を王子に見てもらえて良かった」と話した。
記念植樹で安倍晋三首相は日本を象徴するソメイヨシノ、内堀雅雄知事は県の木・ケヤキ、高松義行本宮市長は市の木・マユミを市内在住の親子と一緒に植えた。

石巻市では、社屋が津波にのまれながらも手書きの壁新聞を発行した石巻日日新聞の施設を訪れ、記者や津波で３人の子どもを亡くした木工作家の遠藤伸一さん（４６）、綾子さん（４６）夫妻と面会した。
王子は真剣な表情で夫妻の話に耳を傾け、「私も大切な母を亡くした。思い出してつらい時にはきょうのことを思い出します」と語り掛けた。伸一さんが涙ぐんだ際には、王子が腕をさすり、「あなたは立派な父親だ」と励ました。

日英間の棘は戦争捕虜へのパッケージとしての対応が納得できる形で実現していないという認識を日本国自体も持っているわけだが、そうであるのにもかかわらず、なぜ、イギリスの王子様が来日する機会に、この課題を積極的に解決する具体的な仕組みを相手側にも日本の国民にも、明確にすることすらできなかったんだろうか。
棘だ、という自覚があるわけだ。それでもなお、見て見ぬふりしようとする。
おまけに昭和天皇の欧州歴訪でも米国訪問でも、戦争捕虜の方々の意思は印象に残る形で表明されていたという事実があるわけだが、この問題が提起されると、なぜかごぼう料理に焦点をあててごまかそうとする。
一言でいえば、見苦しいにも程があるのだが、日本の有識者は、この棘を、どのような角度で凝視しているのでしょうか。
日本のみなさんも、キャー、カッコいい、ステキな王子様、今度は奥様もお子様もご一緒にぃ、なんてはしゃぐ前に、日英間に横たわる棘の現実を直視して、なにが必要なのかよく考えてみましょう。
日本のおもてなし、心のこもったおもてなし、ほんとうの中身がカラッポだったら、これほど薄気味悪いものはありませんな。

王子様が来日なさいましたときに、一枚の油絵でしょうか、特徴的なタッチで王子様一家の肖像を描いた絵を両手に抱えたご婦人が、王子様がご訪問なさる予定の場所で待っておられる姿が日本のメディアで紹介されましたのを覚えておいでの方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。
こちらのご婦人がどのような思いをもって、絵を描き、それを持参したか、海外の紹介記事ではじめて知ることになりました。
She explained: 'My father fought against the British army in Burma during the war. He was captured, and was afraid, but he told me that the British were very fair.
'He became friends with one of the British soldiers. I grew up hearing these stories from my father, and so I always had a very warm sentiment towards British people. So I wanted to come here and see the prince.'
行間から滲み出してこざるを得ない「日本がイギリス人を戦争捕虜とした当時のふるまい」について、わたくしたちがあまりにも鈍感であることを自覚できずにいて、そこに礼節があるのでしょうか。
武士道やおもてなしという言葉に酔う前に、ここは厳しく自らに問うべき現実的な、そして深刻な課題のひとつが、未熟なまま今に積み残されていること、そのことの真正面に立つことから、なぜ逃げようとするでしょうか。

英国キャンプ 横浜川崎と覚書
２０２０年の東京オリンピックでイギリスの選手団が横浜市と川崎市の施設で事前のキャンプを行うことが正式に決まり、８日東京で締結式が開かれました。
東京・北区で開かれた締結式には、横浜市の林市長と、川崎市の福田市長、それにイギリスオリンピック委員会のセバスチャン・コー委員長などが出席し、覚書に署名しました。
それによりますと、２０２０年の東京オリンピックでイギリスの選手団は大会前の調整などを行う練習場として、横浜市にある横浜国際プールや慶応大学の日吉キャンパス、川崎市の等々力陸上競技場を利用するということです。
イギリスオリンピック委員会のコー委員長は「横浜市や川崎市はスポーツの価値を理解し、イギリスのチームは非常にいい選択をした。
選手にとって最高の場所だと思う」と述べました。
横浜市によりますと、選手団は同行するスタッフも含めて、４００人から５００人ほどになる見通しで、参加する具体的な競技種目などについてはリオデジャネイロオリンピックの後に各競技団体が現地を視察して決まるということです。
締結式の中で、横浜市の林文子市長は「横浜とイギリスは開港以来の歴史で大変強いつながりがあり、お迎えできるのは大変光栄です。
選手第一に考え最高の成績をあげられるように全力でサポートします」と述べました。
また、川崎市の福田紀彦市長は「スポーツを通じて若者の教育やよりよい社会の構築を行っていきたい。川崎の子どもたちにはイギリスの選手たちのすばらしさを知る体験をして欲しい」と述べました。

イギリスで日本文化の発信拠点「ジャパン・ハウス」の開館を記念する式典が開かれ、イギリス王室のウィリアム王子が金属加工が盛んな新潟県の燕三条地域の製品を集めた展示会を視察しました。
ことし６月に一般公開が始まったロンドンにある日本文化の発信拠点「ジャパン・ハウス」では、13日、イギリス王室のウィリアム王子を招いて開館を記念する式典が開かれました。
ここでは、現在、新潟県・燕三条地域で作られた金属製品の展示会が行われていて、食器や工具、それに農器具など合わせて300点が集められています。
会場でウィリアム王子は、高い技術力を知ってもらうために作られた金属板の細工を見学しました。
板には「工場」という漢字が立体的に浮き上がっていて、これを指で押し込むと、表面が平らになって文字と板のつなぎ目がほとんど見えず、文字が消えたようになる仕組みです。
ウィリアム王子は板に触れて加工の精密さを確認すると、「日本の技術とデザインはすごいですね」と感心した様子で話していました。
この後、王子は子どもたちと一緒に、銅の板をたたいて皿に加工する作業を体験していました。

絵本「おさるのジョージ」展

好奇心おうせいな子ザルが主人公の絵本、「おさるのジョージ」の原画などを集めた展示会が愛知県岡崎市で始まりました。
「おさるのジョージ」は、アメリカのレイ夫妻が描いた人のまねをする好奇心おうせいな子ザルの物語で、７０年以上前に絵本が出版され、日本では、ＮＨＫのＥテレでアニメが放送されています。
展示会では絵本の原画などおよそ２００点が並べられ、たこ揚げを楽しんだり魚を捕まえようとしたりする様子などジョージのほのぼのとした表情や姿を見ることができます。
また、ユダヤ人だった作者のレイ夫妻が第２次世界大戦中、戦火から逃れるため、ヨーロッパからアメリカへと渡ったことが若いころの作品とともに紹介されています。
会場には親子連れが訪れ１つ１つの作品を見て愛きょうのあるジョージの姿を楽しんでいました。
学芸員の杉浦健さんは「原画の持つ力を味わいながらどう描かれたのか想像して見てほしいです」と話していました。
この展示会は「おかざき世界子ども美術博物館」で５月２６日まで開かれています。
