Lisa Marie Presley's 'normal' Sussex life as ex-pub owner pays tribute to 'best friend'
The two couples would go out together for dinner, drinks and even on holiday
A former Sussex pub owner has shared his fondest memories of "good friend" Lisa Marie Presley who he met in Rotherfield when she first moved to the Sussex county in 2010. Justin Scales, who used to own The Kings Arms pub in the town back in 2010 with wife Kim, said he met Lisa - who sadly passed away in California yesterday (January 12) - when she first walked into his pub and remained close friends ever since.
Talking about the moment he and his wife first met the singer, who was most-known worldwide for being Elvis Presley's daughter, Justin said: "We owned the local pub and fish and chip business and she just came in with her husband to the pub. We got chatting and became friends.
"She wanted to be normal and see what it was like to be normal in England as opposed to living in LA with all the paparazzi. She just wanted a quiet life, she was writing an album and we'd all go out, including up to London Borough market."
A local at the pub, Lisa and then husband Michael Lockwood would visit around once a week, with Lisa ordering a Guinness. Despite being famous, she appeared like any other local, with her husband's flamboyant hats being the main thing that made the couple stand out.
Justin, 52, recalled what Lisa was like at the pub, where he and his wife, and Lisa and Michael, enjoyed many happy times together. Talking about their very first interaction, he said: "She wasn't flash, she just came in wearing jeans, a jumper, a coat and a hat and that was it. She asked for a sambuca and I said 'you don't want that, it's a school night'. I said have a jagerbomb so we did that then the tequila. She was just normal."
Justin also noted how she was friends with the late Jeff Beck, who also visited the pub regularly. He said: ""Jeff used to come to the pub and we'd all go up to Lisa's. They'd be playing guitars and all sorts. They were friends."
As well as sharing fond memories with Lisa here in Sussex, Justin and his wife also went on holidays with Lisa and her family, flying to America on two occasions. Justin told SussexLive: "We went on holiday with them out to Hawaii and LA and experienced their life there like she wanted to experience our life here. We were really close, we spent two weeks at her house in Hawaii and went to her 42nd birthday party in Vegas.
"She flew us there on a jet. We paid our own way, we were just good friends. We went and had Sunday lunch with her grandparents and Priscilla and just did normal things that we would all do."
After spending time with her in her Hawaiin house, the Sussex couple also went to Vegas and LA with the singer. The pair were also invited to Graceland to celebrate one of Elvis's birthdays but had to turn it down due to work commitments.
Having seen Lisa at least once a week, the couple also saw Lisa's famiy a lot, with Justiecalling one time when himself, wife Kim, Lisa, Michael and Jeff Beck travelled in a car from Rotherfield to Wimbledon to see Priscilla in a pantomime in 2012. Priscilla had also visited their pub a few times herself.
