Suspect Shot & Killed by HPD Following Barricade at Waikiki Hotel

WAIKIKI -- The suspect in a Waikiki barricade situation has died after being shot in a stand off with Honolulu Police.

HPD confirmed the suspect was shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital in critical condition. He died later from the gunshot wounds.

The 10 hour stand off ended after midnight early Friday morning.

Police could be heard on a bullhorn calling out to "Benjamin" by name, urging the man to give himself up, throughout a stand off that froze several blocks in Honolulu's bustling Waikiki tourist district.

A section of Kuhio Avenue remained shut down while Honolulu police officers responded to a barricade situation at the Waikiki hotel, into late Thursday night.

HPD says it responded to a report of shots fired and a man barricaded in a room at Ohia Waikiki Studio Suites, around 2:15 p.m. Authorities say the building was partially evacuated. Two neighboring hotels were also evacuated, the Kuhio Banyan and Hawaiian King.

Locals told KITV that the deceased, Benjamin, was a known local in the area.

Kuhio Avenue was completely closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic from Nahua Street to Seaside Avenue while officers attempted to bring about a peaceful conclusion.

The HPD Criminal Investigation Division negotiators and SWAT were called out to the scene.

A drone was also seen deployed by HPD.

The age of the deceased has not yet been released.

The onetime Honolulu man who killed John Lennon says the ex-Beatle would want him released from prison.

Mark David Chapman has almost finished his minimum sentence of 20 years in prison for the slaying of Lennon in 1980, and will have his first parole hearing Oct. 3. Chapman is serving a life sentence at Attica Correctional Facility near Rochester, N.Y.

Chapman came to Hawaii about 1977. He worked at Castle Medical Center from August that year until November 1979, starting in housekeeping and moving into the community relations office. Supervisors and co-workers said he was "an all-around good guy" and "an excellent employee."

In June 1979, Chapman married Gloria H. Abe.

He left Castle to work in December 1979 as a security guard and maintenance worker at a Waikiki condominium at 444 Nahua. He resigned Oct. 23, 1980 -- signing John Lennon instead of Mark Chapman on the log the last day he worked.

He bought a .38-caliber handgun on Young Street about six weeks before the shooting. New York police said it was the same caliber and make of gun used to kill Lennon.

In an interview to be aired on Court TV the day before his parole hearing, Chapman said he thinks Lennon would have wanted him to be set free.

An obituary posted by his mother on Facebook said Cornell-Duranleau passed away suddenly and was born in Lennon, Michigan to Diane Cundiff. After his mother died, he was adopted by the Cornell-Duranleau family of Corunna.
