CDC Director Walensky Has Covid Rebound After Paxlovid Treatment

• Recurrence of viral symptoms may be more common than reported
• Biden, Fauci both had symptom rebound after treatment

US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Rochelle Walensky is experiencing a rebound of Covid-19 symptoms after taking Pfizer Inc.’s antiviral Paxlovid.

Walensky contracted a mild case of Covid earlier this month and tested negative after taking Pfizer’s treatment. On Sunday, she began developing mild symptoms and has again tested positive, the CDC said Monday in a statement. The infectious disease expert is isolating at home and will continue to work virtually.

Many patients, including President Joe Biden and Anthony Fauci, have faced a  return of Covid symptoms after taking a full, five-day course of Pfizer’s drug. The phenomenon appears far more common than officially reported, and rebounding patients may still spread the disease, doctors said in a September New England Journal of Medicine article. 

Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla told Bloomberg News in May that doctors could prescribe a second course of treatment to rebounding patients, although US regulators said later that there’s no evidence yet that repeat treatment will help. Scientists at the National Institutes of Health added earlier this month that they don’t believe that a five-day course of Paxlovid is too short for the body to develop a strong immune response to the virus that causes Covid-19. 

Paxlovid remains the leading oral treatment for patients at high risk of developing severe disease. It doesn’t appear to help lower-risk patients. While the Biden administration recently ramped up efforts to broaden access, Black and Hispanic Covid patients have been prescribed the antiviral at much lower rates than those who are White, according to the CDC. 

Paxlovid supplies remain strong in the US, but it’s not clear that they will last the winter, a Biden administration official told Bloomberg last week. The government may not have funding to buy additional doses before next year, when distribution of the product will transition to the commercial market.
