Frail WNBA star Brittney Griner appears in court hunched over as Russia extends her detention for another MONTH: State Department says has been 'wrongfully detained' on drug charges

• Russia has extended WNBA star Brittney Griner's detention by a month with state officials claiming she was caught 'red-handed trying to smuggle hash oil' 
• Griner's lawyer Alexander Boikov said he believed the relatively short extension of the detention indicated the case would come to trial soon
• US officials say the 31-year-old is being illegally detained and are working to free the basketball player who has pleaded not guilty  
• Griner was arrested at Moscow airport on February 18 for reportedly bringing vape cartridges containing hash oil, which is illegal in Russia
• She was in the country to play for UMMC Yekaterinburg on a reported $1million contract but now faces 10 years in a labor camp
• In early May, her case was handed off to the SPEHA, which negotiates the release of hostages and other Americans deemed wrongfully detained

 In 2020, Griner, along with teammate Brianna Turner called for the WNBA to stop playing the United States national anthem before the games. She made her remarks after Mercury players refused to take the floor during a pre-season game in Bradenton, Florida. Griner said she was protesting the killing of Breonna Taylor as part of the wider George Floyd protests.^[82] She said later during a media teleconference, “I honestly feel we should not play the national anthem during our season. I think we should take that much of a stand.”^[83] She said that she does have respect for her country but that she did not believe that the national anthem should be played at sporting events.^[84]
