Free Fallin' 14@Orlando

Horrifying moment boy, 14, dies after slipping out of 400ft drop tower ride at Orlando's ICON park

  • A 14-year-old fell from a drop tower ride at the ICON park in Orlando on Thursday
  • Teen was taken to hospital but died from his injuries, Orange County police said
  • Orlando Free Fall rotates around a central tower before plummeting downwards
  • The ride is a new addition to the park and only opened in December last year
  • It's unclear what the minimum height restriction is, or if the boy was wearing a harness when he slipped out
  • The park has not commented on the tragedy and the boy has not been named
  • In 2020, an employee died fixing another ride at the same attraction park

| It comes less than two years after a park employee died after falling 200 feet from the Orlando StarFlyer attraction.

The 21-year-old employee was performing a safety check about halfway up the 450-foot-tall ride when he plummeted to his death just before 8am on September 14 2020.

EXCLUSIVE: Wife of US Army veteran, 47, who left Connecticut to join Ukraine's battle against Russia says 'it's in his DNA' as a soldier to fight and that he 'couldn't sit and watch the war on TV'

  • American veteran James Vasquez, 47, joined Ukraine's military as a foreign volunteer earlier this month
  • He has been fighting on the front lines alongside Ukrainians to repel Russia's invasion forces
  • Vasquez left his work as a home renovation contractor in Connecticut to join the fight
  • Now he posts harrowing updates on Twitter showing his unit's battle triumphs over the Russians
  • On Thursday Vasquez shared video of a decimated Russian tank, saying an occupied village was liberated
  • His wife Tina tells DailyMail.com that being a soldier is 'in his DNA' and she supports his decision to fight

An American military veteran has left his job as a home renovation contractor in Connecticut behind to travel to Ukraine and take up arms in the country's fight against the Russian invasion.

James Vasquez, 47, arrived in Ukraine earlier this month, and is now fighting shoulder-to-shoulder with the country's military against Vladimir Putin's invading forces -- all while posting nerve-wracking updates on Twitter

A former US Army staff sergeant who served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, Vasquez is the father of four adult children, with two sons and two step-sons, his wife Tina told DailyMail.com.

Since trading in his tool belt for an AK-47 and hand grenades, Vasquez has faced harrowing combat in an undisclosed part of Ukraine, but Tina says that she has supported his decision to join the fight from the very beginning.

'It's in his DNA, and he approached me, came to me after work, and said, "We need to talk, I can't watch this on TV, I need to go help these guys,"' she said.

"Free Fallin'" is the opening track from American musician Tom Petty's debut solo album, Full Moon Fever (1989). The song was written by Petty and his writing partner for the album, Jeff Lynne, and features Lynne on backing vocals and bass guitar. The duo wrote and recorded the single in two days, making it the first song completed for Full Moon Fever.

"Free Fallin'" is one of Petty's most famous tracks as well as his highest- and longest-charting.[3] It peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in January 1990. Petty and The Heartbreakers performed the song at the MTV Video Music Awards in 1989, with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin, and at the February 2008 Super Bowl XLII Halftime Show.[4] The song is ranked No. 219 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. It was featured in the film Jerry Maguire (1996) and The Sopranos episode 2.13, "Funhouse" (2000). Lou Reed selected the song as one of his "picks of 1989".[5] The song was #2 on the Spotify Global Viral 50 following the death of Petty.[6]

Los Angeles-area references

The song's lyrics make references to the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles, including:

  • Reseda – a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley
  • 101 "Ventura" Freeway – the lyrics mention "a freeway runnin' through the yard" of the subject's Reseda home - putatively the 101 Freeway, which has an exit for Reseda Boulevard, albeit in the higher-income neighborhood of Tarzana
  • "The Valley" – a colloquial name for the San Fernando Valley
  • Ventura Boulevard – a primary east-west thoroughfare that runs along the southern border of the San Fernando Valley
  • "Mulholland" – a reference to Mulholland Drive, a road that follows the ridgeline of the eastern Santa Monica Mountains and the Hollywood Hills between the San Fernando Valley and Hollywood

Shields up, Scotty! Star Trek legend William Shatner, 90, avoids injury in car crash while driving around LA... after recently returning from space

  • Shatner was involved in a minor car collision in the Studio City area of Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon
  • The 90-year-old actor stayed on-scene and appeared to avoid injury in the two-car blow as he detailed the incident with a LAPD traffic officer
  • It's unclear who or what caused the collision. DailyMail.com has reached out to Shatner's representatives for comment
  • He made history as the oldest man in space after Jeff Bezos invited him on the mission of a lifetime when he rocketed out of the atmosphere on the Blue Origin

He waited by the silver Acura and a female driver after the collision, which appeared to happen near Ventura Boulevard.

Shatner, who starred as Captain Kirk from 1966-69 on Star Trek, and newly minted astronauts Chris Boshuizen, Glen de Vries and Audrey Powers, ventured 351,186 feet above Earth's surface where they spent three minutes in weightlessness.

Los Angeles (US: /lɔːs ˈænələs/ (audio speaker iconlisten) lawss AN-jəl-əs;[a] Spanish: Los Ángeles [los ˈaŋxeles], lit.'The Angels'), often referred to by its initials L.A.,[14] is the largest city in California. With a 2020 population of 3,898,747,[10] it is the second-largest city in the United States, following New York City. Los Angeles is known for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic and cultural diversity, Hollywood film industry and sprawling metropolitan area.

In 1771, Franciscan friar Junípero Serra directed the building of the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel, the first mission in the area.[24] On September 4, 1781, a group of forty-four settlers known as "Los Pobladores" founded the pueblo they called El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles, 'The Town of Our Lady the Queen of the Angels'.[25] The original name of the settlement is disputed; the Guinness Book of World Records rendered it as "El Pueblo de Nuestra Señora la Reina de los Ángeles de Porciúncula";[26] other sources have shortened or alternate versions of the longer name.[27] The present-day city has the largest Roman Catholic archdiocese in the United States. Two-thirds of the Mexican or (New Spain) settlers were mestizo or mulatto, a mixture of African, indigenous and European ancestry.[28] The settlement remained a small ranch town for decades, but by 1820, the population had increased to about 650 residents.[29] Today, the pueblo is commemorated in the historic district of Los Angeles Pueblo Plaza and Olvera Street, the oldest part of Los Angeles.[30]

Orlando is a fictional character and one of the male leads in the comedy As You Like It (1599/1600) by William Shakespeare.

Orlando is the youngest son of the deceased Sir Rowland de Bois and is the brother of Oliver. He is brave, chivalrous, tender, modest, smart, strong, and handsome. He resents the harsh treatment he receives at Oliver's hands and laments how Oliver has denied him an education and the money he is rightfully owed. Nevertheless, he is successful in expressing his love for Rosalind to her before he escapes to the Forest of Arden with his servant Adam.

At the start of the play Orlando is indignant to the harsh treatment of his brother Oliver, and he is unaware of Oliver's plot to kill him during a wrestling match. Though he wins the match he angers Duke Frederick, and therefore he flees the court to live in the Forest of Arden. There, he is accepted into the circle of the usurped Duke Senior and begins to find freedom in life in the forest. A more poetic side to him comes out as he leaves poems on trees to Rosalind. When Rosalind sees these poems she strikes up a relationship with him as Ganymede, and the two act out a relationship between Orlando and Rosalind under the guise that it will cure Orlando of his love for her. By the end of the story he is married to Rosalind and reinstated in his wealth and station.

He is portrayed as exceptionally strong in both body and in his devotion to love. It is these qualities that make Rosalind fall in love with him.

Laurence Olivier played the character in a 1936 film[1] adaptation of the play with Elizabeth Bergner opposite him as Rosalind.
