クラウス・シュワブ、クラウス・シュヴァープ（独: Klaus Schwab、1938年3月30日 - ）はスイスの経済学者、ビジネスマン、慈善活動家。世界経済フォーラムの主宰で知られ、妻ヒルダがこの事業に参加している。ヘンリー・キッシンジャーの教え子の一人。
ドイツ・ラーベンスブルク生まれ。フリブール大学に経済学博士号 (サマ・カム・ロード) を取得したほか、スイス連邦工科大学に工学博士号を、ハーバード大学のケネディスクールに行政学修士号を取得。クラウス・シュワブは、60年代後半のハーバード大学で、ヘンリー・キッシンジャーから教えを受け、彼の考え方に最も影響を与えた3-4人の人物の中に彼を含めた。1971年にヒルダと結婚。1972年ジュネーヴ大学の最年少教授に就任。2004年ダン・デイヴィッド賞受賞。ヒルダとの間に二人の子供をもうけ、二人の孫がいる。
慈善活動
1971年に、ローマクラブをモデルに、世界経済の改善のために非営利組織として世界経済フォーラムを設立した。今日では組織の目的を経済、政治、知的活動のグローバル化の促進であるとしている。
1998年には社会起業のためのシュワブ財団をジュネーヴに設立した。
2004年には新たな組織「若き世界指導者のフォーラム」を設立し、40歳以下の人材1,000人を集めて世界規模の問題に対する改善策を討議した。

Klaus Martin Schwab (German pronunciation: [klaʊs ˈmaʁtiːn ʃvaːp]; born 30 March 1938) is a German engineer and economist. In 1971 he founded what would become the World Economic Forum, where he currently serves as executive chairman.
Schwab was born in Ravensburg of a mother from Zurich and a father from Roggwil, who was a manager of Escher Wyss & Cie. in Ravensburg.[1] The family was monitored by the Gestapo,[2] which also interrogated his mother in 1944 for using a Swiss accent in public.[1] The family then repatriated to Switzerland. He is a citizen of Germany although he has three Swiss grandparents and two Swiss brothers.[2]
Schwab attended 1st and 2nd grade at the primary school in the Wädenswil district of Au ZH, in Switzerland. After World War Two, the family moved back to Germany where Schwab attended the Spohn-Gymnasium in Ravensburg until his Abitur in 1957.[2][3]
In 1961, he graduated as a mechanical engineer from Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich,[4] which awarded him a doctorate in engineering entitled: Der längerfristige Exportkredit als betriebswirtschaftliches Problem des Maschinenbaues (Longer-term export credit as a business problem in mechanical engineering),[5]. He was also awarded a doctorate in economics from the University of Fribourg,[4][6] and a Master of Public Administration degree from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.[7]
Schwab was professor of business policy at the University of Geneva from 1972 to 2003, and since then has been an Honorary Professor there.[4] Since 1979, he has published the Global Competitiveness Report, an annual report assessing the potential for increasing productivity and economic growth of countries around the world, written by a team of economists. The report is based on a methodology developed by Schwab, measuring competitiveness not only in terms of productivity but also based on sustainability criteria.[8]
During the earlier years of his career, he served on a number of company boards, such as The Swatch Group, The Daily Mail Group, and Vontobel Holding. He is a former member of the steering committee of the Bilderberg Group.[9]
Escher Wyss & Cie., also known as Escher Wyss AG, was a Swiss industrial company with a focus on engineering and turbine construction. Its headquarters were in the Zürich quarter of Escher Wyss, which takes its name from the company.
The company was founded, as Escher Wyss & Cie., in 1805 by Hans Caspar Escher and Salomon von Wyss. After having originally started the company as a textile spinning business, the two expanded their enterprise to include a machine shop that manufactured textile machinery, water wheels, water turbines, power transmission equipment, and starting in 1835, ships, including boilers and steam engines.[1]
After 1860, under the direction of Hans Zoelly, the company concentrated on hydraulic systems, steam engines and cooling systems. Between 1904 and 1929 steam turbines were produced for thermal power plants, ships and locomotives. The company also manufactured the hydraulic systems of hydroelectric plants. During WWII, the company was a supplier for the German war effort, manufacturing turbines for Norsk Hydro,[2] and supplying flamethrowers.[3] The company remained in existence until it was taken over in 1969 by Sulzer AG,[1] now inside of the group Andritz AG.
World War II
Out of political and personal considerations, Sulzer decided to sell its subsidiaries in Germany by the beginning of the war.[7]
Sulzer was blacklisted by the Allies during World War II due to an increase in trade with Axis countries. Sulzer refused to sign an agreement to limit the future sale of marine diesel engines to the Axis countries, and was blacklisted by the Allies as a result.
