彼の名前“Kobe”は、父ジョーのお気に入りだったアメリカの鉄板焼きレストラン「Kobe Steak House（神戸ステーキハウス）」に妻と行った際、“KOBE” (神戸)の名前の由来を店主に聞いた事をきっかけに、両親が名前を気に入って付けたものである^[4][5]。コービー本人は1998年に初来日した際に、生まれて初めて自身の名前の由来となった神戸を訪れている。その際、東京で開催されたアディダス・ABCバスケットボールキャンプでの募金を市民福祉に役立てるため神戸市に寄付した。また、2001年12月13日には神戸大使に委嘱され^[6]2011年まで続けた^[7]。
