Japan's "fugu" or puffer fish market. - BioMedSearch
Japanese domestic landings of torafugu and karasu range from 2,000 to 2,500 t a year. Both species are caught by longliners from September through March in the southwestern Sea of Japan and from July through January in the Seto Inland Sea. In November 1986, the Japan Tsushima Swellfish Longline Fishery Company of Tsushima, Nagasaki Prefecture, signed a 3-year private agreement with the North Korean Government to fish for fugu in the Yellow Sea off the west coast of North Korea. Because the North Koreans do not allow fugu longlining, the Japanese use only pole-and-line fishing methods. Japan has historically fished for fugu in North Korean waters because of the large size and high quality of the fish caught there. Fugu caught in waters off South Korea are said to be of lower quality.

N.Korea may consider H-bomb test in Pacific
North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho says the country's leader Kim Jong Un's statement may have suggested conducting a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean.
Ri was speaking to reporters in New York on Thursday.
He was asked what Kim had meant in his statement in response to US President Donald Trump's speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday. Kim's statement said that he would consider the "highest level of hardline countermeasure in history" against the United States.
Ri said his country may consider a hydrogen bomb test in the Pacific Ocean, though he does not know Kim's exact thoughts.

North Korea in the New World Order
Hazel Smith
St. Martin's Press, 1996 - Korea (North) - 221 pages
Though north Korea remains relatively isolated and unknown to the western world, it is possible to undertake solid research on the country. This book offers a variety of perspectives on the position of north Korea in the new post-Cold War era, and on how the country is attempting to adapt to a changed world. It examines US, European Union and British foreign policy towards north Korea, and north Korea's responses. It investigates the tensions that could develop in north Korean state and society as the country faces an increasingly market-oriented capitalist world; and identifies the historical, political and ideological foundations of contemporary north Korean society and culture. The book is the work of a multidisciplinary team of scholars from Britain and the United States who work in the fields of anthropology, economics, history, politics and international relations, social geography and sociology, most of whom have conducted first-hand research in north Korea.

China amb. to Japan calls for building trust
ShareTwitterFacebookGoogle+LINE
The Chinese ambassador to Japan says relations between the 2 countries are taking a stable path of improvement despite various complicating factors.
Cheng Yonghua was speaking at a news conference in Tokyo on Tuesday, 3 days before the 45th anniversary of the normalization of Japan-China diplomatic ties.
He also said an increasing number of people in Japan have positive views on China's "One Belt, One Road" economic initiative. The initiative is aimed at building a vast economic zone by linking China and Europe via land and sea.
The ambassador noted that there is a lack of mutual political trust between the 2 countries. He said China and Japan should push for positive exchanges in politics and security.
He also said he hopes the countries will further strengthen dialogue and communication, and determine their positions in line with current trends and their national interests.
The ambassador also referred to North Korea, which has been pressing ahead with its nuclear and missile programs.
He stressed China's stance of advocating dialogues between relevant nations. He said it is important to ease tensions because the situation is complicated and risky.
