　日本はやはり人がいいなと思ったのは潘基文（バン・キムン）国連事務総長の一件である。先月２６日、潘氏は韓国での記者会見で「日本政府と政治指導者は非常に深く自らを省みて、国際的な未来を見通すビジョンが必要だ」と語った。この発言に菅義偉官房長官が「非常に疑問を感じている」と応じたのはもっともだが、潘氏が「日本のみについて指摘したものではない」と答えると、日本政府はあっさり矛を収めてしまった。

　まあ、一般的には賢明な対応かもしれないが、潘発言の不用意さは否定しがたい。弁明も苦しい。韓国の対日感情がとげとげしい折、事務総長たる者、発言には重々注意するのが当然である。

　それに事務総長は紛争の調停者でもある。例えばペレス・デクエヤル氏は１９８０〜９０年代のフォークランド紛争、湾岸戦争などの調停に活躍し、コフィ・アナン氏は２０００年代の米同時多発テロやイラク戦争などの激動に対処した。就任６年の潘氏は中国とのパイプを生かしてシリアや東アジアの緊張緩和に努めてもよさそうだが、どうも存在感が薄いし中立性への批判もある。だから、よけい深く潘発言に首をかしげてしまった。

　ところで、潘発言を社説で取り上げたのは２社だけで小紙も書かなかった。無論、見送るのも知恵だが、韓国や中国に関する問題はなるべく取り上げ、読者と共に考えるのが時代の要請だと思う。日本の新聞も冷静かつ強靱（きょうじん）な論理展開で積極的に発信しないと、東アジアでは子供が駄々をこねるような“論説”がはびこり、言論状況の劣化が続く。ちなみに韓国紙は日本が潘氏に圧力をかけたとか盗っ人たけだけしいとか言っている。これでは議論がかみ合わない。

So far Mainichi’s worry is just how they could keep advertisement sponsors, not readers. They have not apologised for their fabricated articles- mostly no resources while they explained they had just translated articles from magazines circulated in Japan. They have just said a sorry for “inadequate” quotes. It is because they pretend to have reported facts.

I wonder why Mainichi didn’t see the second bankruptcy when it came to be appeared that they leaked the detailed information to the cult, “Oumu Shinrikyo” about the lawyer who supported the victims of this new religion group and got murdered with his wife and baby.

Wai Wai’s been running for a long time, book versions of its columns haver been published, and there are obviously a lot of people who enjoy it. Maybe they’re all low lifes, like me, I don’t know. But I can’t see that it does any harm, other than to offend the sensibilities of people who are probably already taking life and themselves too seriously.

I’m not arguing against the existence of WaiWai, because I know how funny it could be, but the position of goofy tabloid news alongside straight news was, in a word, “inappropriate.” For a country so easily misunderstood, WaiWai was a constant acknowledgment to the uninitiated that Japan really is some kind of perverted wacky-land.

I for one am rather sad. For years now, Wai Wai has been part of my healthy breakfast. Now there’s no point in even visiting the Mainichi site, is there? I’m sure that more’s going on here than justa few readers complaining about the content. Actually, for a long time now Wai Wai has been pretty tame compared to some of its older stories about knidergarten hookers, elder deruharu, incest in Hokkaido and Chocko-Ball Mugabi. T’will be missed.

What a bunch of tossers. Lose the only thing that justified the existence of the Mainichi website in English because “Some readers pointed out that various articles published in the WaiWai column were inappropriate content for the Mainichi Daily News. We respond to this criticism by halting publication of this column.”
So how many is “some”? Little bit of detail too much to expect from a supposedly serious newspaper?
As for the public promises to “severely punish the head of the Digital Media Division, which is responsible for overseeing the site, the manager responsible for the corner and the editor involved with the stories”, well how about some hara-kiri for the editor-in-chief or whatever he’s called, for letting such filth leak out in his name for so many years.
Can’t wait to see how much the hits for the MDN site go down now.

It’s a big loss, and will be missed. I don’t really agree that the WaiWai stuff was presented as equal to the headlines. If they had been lumped in with the basic headlines, sure, but they had their own section in the corner, with a more-than-adequate disclaimer. Anyone who encountered those stories elsewhere on the net and then made some kind of blanket assumption about the Japanese is a moron, anyway. Besides, on countless occasions you’d get something absurd such as “Footwear fetish thief used boot odor to fantasize about owners” in the national headlines first, only for it to appear a week later in the WaiWai with further details. When the real headlines are no longer more surreal and salacious than the tabloids’, then maybe the critics will have a leg to stand on. In the meantime, I’m sure the Mainichi will renew its commitment to real news by publishing tons of photos the next time an exciting new Triumph bra is released.

I'm not big on punishment myself. One of my personal favorite phrases is: "Don't be sorry, just don't do it again." Apologizing and continuing the behavior rings insincere, while reforming proves the sincerity, even if an apology is lacking. Of course this only applies if noone was hurt.
I just looked at wai wai as a Japanese version of Star or Enquirer. So the problem wasn't with the articles, the problem was with the audience.

This blog post sums up my feelings toward WaiWai, particularly the last sentence:
You can’t be a news service and also offer shameless articles concerning “bestiality restaurants.”
I know there are many people who like to laugh at weird tabloid articles, but they don't belong on a large, non-tabloid newspaper's site. You don't see other major newspapers' sites having that kind of content. Yes, they were in their own section, and yes, I know that they cited the tabloids, but even then there were still some doinks out there who took them as 100% truth (even though the stories were written in an obviously tabloid style), including that "bestiality restaurant" article...
Then again it seems that the English version of Mainichi has always been more "tabloid-y" than the Japanese version.
I don't think that those responsible should be heavily punished, though.

I think I agree with Wakannai. While having the sexy and sensationalistic articles in a "respectable newspaper" was certainly ill-advised and bad form, I don't see how there was any actual wrongdoing.
I've read a few of the articles that were linked at various websites and they always seemed like titillating but ultimately harmless junk. Any sensible person stumbling upon one of the articles would recognize them for the tabloid trash they are and take them with a grain of salt. On the other hand, anyone who takes their ideas from what a country's culture is like from a tabloid rag is probably beyond help already.

Well, admission time.
When I was at the Mainichi, I was one of the two people responsible for the intro of WAI WAI to the paper. Of course, the Wai Wai was structurally very different and we were much more selective in content back in 1991. Basically, we took about half a dozen stories, condensed each one into one paragraph, and had a big section of topical Japanese newspaper and weekly mag comics with translation and cultural notes, etc. Basically, the Wai Wai page was "this is this week in Japanese pop culture."
Apparently, it's changed somewhat since Adam and I worked on WaiWai.

2008年6月25日、世界的な男性向けウェブサイト「AskMen（米FOX系列の男性向け情報サイト）」に先日掲載された「世界で好色な国ベスト10」が、シンガポールのメディアを通じて国内に紹介されたが、中国が4位にランクインした結果に多くの国民が不満を持ったようだ。北方網の報道。

中国が4位にランクインした理由は「世界で販売されるアダルトグッズの7割を生産していること」 「性の解放が加速化し、過去8年で北京市に5000軒のアダルトショップが開店したこと」が挙げられているが、ネット上では「不条理な理由」と反発の声が大きい。一方で、「世界のAV大国・日本がランクインしないのは何故？」との声がネット上で高まっている。

中国人が日本人を「好色」と考える原因は、質・量ともに世界最先端をいく日本製アダルトビデオの存在が大きい。中国の男性も多くがその恩恵に授かっていることから、その固定観念は覆しがたいと思われる。

あるネットユーザーはBBS上で「日本のAVを見れば、日本人がどれだけ性に飢えているかを思い知る。見た目は控えめにとりつくろっていても、頭の中は卑猥なことでいっぱい。男尊女卑の根強い日本には、男性を満足させる“おもちゃ”で溢れている」と発言。これが大方の中国人の見方だろう。

しかし一方で、日本の社会背景や実情をよく理解するネットユーザーからはこんな意見も。 「日本人が“好色”なのはAVの世界の中だけ。一般市民の多くは実に保守的だし、中国と同じように、一部の若者が性に対して比較的オープンなだけだ」。ほかには「ストレス過多の日本社会では、むしろセックスレスが問題になっている。高齢化社会を見てもわかるだろう」としている。

また、ストレス社会を背負う日本人男性に同情的な意見も。「働きバチの日本人男性は毎晩残業に残業を重ね、やっと開放されても上司のとのお酒のつきあいが待っている。ストレスのはけ口を求めてAVや援助交際、 いかがわしいアニメやゲームが流行するのも無理はない」。中国人の日本に対する極めて一方的な見方は、だいぶ変化してきているようだ

過激な性表現も日本人を卑下しており売国的、反日的と言えるのではなかろうか？

毎日新聞の報道によると、和歌山大３年の福田秀幸（２１）、前川隆史（２０）、竹田隼也（２１）の３容疑者が暴行と強要の疑いで逮捕されたようです。
ニュース和歌山には、３容疑者が「カバンモチＣＯＭ」というインターンシップの仕組みを立ち上げようとしていることが書かれており、ビジネス間での関係もあった模様。
さらに、朝日わくわくネットによると、容疑者の１人である竹田隼也（２１）は「@wiki」を運営する「アットフリークス」の取締役を務めているようです。
