US nursing body warns of 'crisis of huge proportions' after 100,000 nurses quit due to COVID-19 burnout and 900,000 — a FIFTH of the total workforce — will be gone by 2027

A major US nursing group has warned of a 'crisis of huge proportions' after the sector lost 100,000 nurses during the pandemic and a total of 900,000 will be gone by 2027.

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing surveyed 29,472 registered nurses (RNs) across 45 states and found many complained of feeling 'burned out,' 'fatigued,' or at the 'end of the rope,' often during every shift.

Roughly 100,000 nurses left these past two years due to retirements, stress and burnout during the pandemic, and another 610,000 plan to exit by 2027 for the same reasons, researchers found.

Even more worrying than that huge dent in the workforce is the 188,962 other nurses aged 40 years and younger who also plan to quit in the next four years, despite only qualifying relatively recently.

The survey comes after a year that saw six unions representing some 32,000 nurses launch strikes around the country, and as health foundations throw millions of dollars to prop up the hemorrhaging sector.
