Breakthrough malaria vaccine gets approved as Ghana rolls out 'world-changer' jab to fight mosquito-borne disease that kills a child every minute

• The vaccine R21 has been approved by Ghana's Food and Drugs Authority
• It was approved for those at highest risk of death - children aged 5 - 36 months
• Due to a manufacturing partnership, 200million doses will be made annually

The new vaccine was created by researchers at the same Oxford University centre where AstraZeneca's Covid jab was developed.

Ghana has approved it for kids aged 5-36 months, who are most vulnerable to the illness.

Although it's being hailed as a huge breakthrough, R21, as it is officially called, isn't the first malaria vaccine.

Another one, called Mosquirix and developed by GlaxoSmithKline, was endorsed by the World Health Organization last year. 

But a lack of funding and commercial potential thwarted the production of enough doses, with just 15million doses each year committed to. 

This is despite WHO saying roughly 100million doses a year of the four-dose vaccine are needed long-term to cover around 25million children. 

R21 has a manufacturing advantage thanks to a deal with the Serum Institute of India to produce up to 200million doses annually. 

Each dose is expected to cost a couple of dollars.

Mid-stage data from the Oxford vaccine trial, involving more than 400 young children, was published in the Lancet in September.

Vaccine effectiveness was 80 per cent per cent in the group which received a higher dose of the immune-boosting adjuvant component of the vaccine — an ingredient that helps create a stronger immune response in people receiving a jab. 

Efficacy rates stood at closer to the 70 per cent mark in children in the lower-dose group, 12 months after their fourth dose. 

The doses were administered ahead of the peak malaria season in Burkina Faso, West Africa.

And data from an ongoing phase III clinical trial in Burkina Faso, Kenya, Mali and Tanzania, that has enrolled 4,800 children, is expected to be published in a medical journal in the coming months.

However, late-stage data - which suggests a similar vaccine performance as in the phase II trial - has been shared with regulatory authorities over the last six months, Oxford scientist Adrian Hill said.

Childhood vaccines in Africa are typically paid for by international organisations such as Gavi and UNICEF after they have been backed by the WHO.

Hill noted that it was unusual that a regulatory authority in Africa had reviewed the data quicker than the WHO.

'Particularly since Covid, African regulators have been taking a much more proactive stance, they've been saying... we don't want to be last in the queue.'
