 「チャイナ・ガール」（China Girl）は、デヴィッド・ボウイとイギー・ポップが、1977年にベルリンにいた頃に共同制作した曲である。

1977年、イギー・ポップのアルバム『イディオット』の収録曲として、初めて世に出た。この曲は、ボウイがおもちゃのピアノを用いて作曲した。後にポップが薬物依存症になり、破産の危機にも瀕した。そのためボウイは、1983年にアルバム『レッツ・ダンス』でセルフ・カバーした。ポップが印税の半分を得て、財政的に安定してもらうためである。ナイル・ロジャースによるプロデュースの下、この曲にはイギー・ポップの暗くラフなバージョンよりもよりコマーシャルな要素が与えられた。

この曲は「レッツ・ダンス」と同じくシングル用に編集されたが、その印象的なミュージック・ビデオがより興味を惹き付けた。デヴィッド・マレット監督によるミュージック・ビデオは主にオーストラリア、メルボルンの中華街やポート・ジャクソン湾に浮かぶ船の上で撮られた。共演者であるGeeling Ng（英語版）が波の上でボウイと裸で横たわっているシーン（『地上より永遠に』からの影響）がフィーチャーされ、タブロイド紙を賑わせた。このミュージック・ビデオは83年度のMTVアワードを獲得している。しかし、後にVHSビデオやDVDなどのソフトに収録される際には、微妙に修正されている。

イギリスでは、シングルが1983年6月14日の1週、2位まで上昇したが、ポリスの「見つめていたい」が1位を堅守していたため2位止まりとなった。アメリカでは10位まで上昇した。

ボウイが行った1980年代のライブ・レパートリーとなり、1985年に開催したロンドンでのライヴエイドでもリハーサルに使われた。しかし、「5年間」「ファスシネイション」の2曲と共にライヴでの時間的制約のため、本番では演奏されなかった。

Nile Rodgers, the producer of David Bowie's 1983 version of the song, offered his own interpretation of the lyrics: "I figured China Girl was about doing drugs ... because China is China White which is heroin, girl is cocaine. I thought it was a song about speedballing. I thought, in the drug community in New York, coke is girl, and heroin is boy. So then I proceeded to do this arrangement which was ultra pop. Because I thought that, being David Bowie, he would appreciate the irony of doing something so pop about something so taboo. And what was really cool was that he said 'I love that!'."^[3]

Speedball (or powerball) is a mixture of cocaine (a stimulant) with heroin or morphine (an opioid) taken intravenously or by nasal insufflation.^[1] Original speedball combinations used cocaine hydrochloride mixed with morphine sulfate,^[2] while modern speedballs may also use pharmaceutical opioids, benzodiazepines, or barbiturates along with stimulants.

Speedballs often give stronger effects than either drug when taken alone due to drug synergy, and are considered a particularly hazardous mixture that can easily cause heart attack, respiratory arrest and death.^[3] Evidence suggests that when compared to single drugs, speedballs are more likely to lead to addiction,^[4][5] and users are more likely to relapse^[4][6] and also to overdose.^[7][8][9]
