COVID in Israel: Serious Cases Rise as Third Jab Campaign Gathers Steam

The rate of positive tests – which currently stands at 3.13 – is the highest since the delta variant of COVID-19 started spreading across IsraelIsrael saw yet another rise in the number of serious coronavirus cases on Sunday as the country's booster jab campaign for people over 60 began over the weekend.

Sunday's number of serious cases, which now stands at 212, is the highest since April. There are currently 37 patients on ventilators, and 37 in critical condition.

According to Health Ministry data, 2,080 new coronavirus cases were diagnosed on Saturday. The rate of positive COVID-19 tests stands at 3.17 percent – a sharp rise from the previous week, which hovered below 2.5 percent, and the highest since the delta variant of the coronavirus started spreading across Israel.

Since the pandemic began in Israel, 6,474 people have died of COVID-19.

Tens of thousands of Israelis aged 60 and older have already booked appointments with their health maintenance organizations to get their third jab.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Health Ministry’s Director-General Nachman Ash urged Israelis over age 60 to get vaccinated. He stressed that there was no need for an antibody test before getting the booster shot.

Experts advising the Health Ministry recommended last week that seniors receive a third dose, although they disagreed on whether the cohort should start at 60 years old, 65 or 70.

Experts told Haaretz that there is still not enough data on the effectiveness and safety of a third dose, but they also expressed concerns about delaying the decision. Data presented at a discussion Wednesday suggested that the vaccine's effectiveness in preventing severe symptoms among those 60 and older has dropped to 81 percent from 97 percent in January.

More than 5.7 million Israelis have received the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine and over 5.3 million Israelis have received two doses.  Neither the U.S. nor the EU have approved coronavirus booster shots. It’s not yet proven if a third dose helps and, if so, who needs one and when. The first large study on the strategy is underway, with thousands of patients in Norway participating.
