Pilot shortage forces American Airlines to cancel 303 flights over
weekend: 3,000 MORE could be axed in July after pilots were fired at the
start of pandemic and not enough have been rehired

pilot shortage for 737 aircraft has been blamed for the travel
disturbances - amid claims thousands more flights could be axed before
summer is out
Many of the
canceled flights were blamed on sick calls, but some planes also
suffered maintenance issues that took them out of action
The cancellations come as airlines struggle to meet increased demand as air travel approaches pre-pandemic levels
A number had been forced let go of staff during the pandemic, and have struggled to fill vacancies
Despite the cancelations, American still leads the pack in terms of scheduled flights
It
lost $9.5 billion in 2020 - more than a quarter of the $35 billion loss
racked up by all US airlines, and fired 1,200 of its 15,000 pilots
