Moderna starts COVID-19 vaccine trials in six-month-old babies and children under 12 despite fewer than 0.01% of infected youngsters dying from COVID

• Moderna has given doses to  the first kids in its vaccine trial for those six months to under 12 
• It will first test which dosage is best to safely trigger an immune response 
• Firm did not give a timeline for the trial, but experts say shots won't likely be offered to children younger than 12 until early 2022 
• Kids aged 12-17 could start getting shots as early as this fall if ongoing trials go well  
• Experts are divided over whether children need vaccines because fewer than 0.2% of deaths have been in under-18s 
• President Biden has set a goal for schools to reopen within the first 100 days of his term, a deadline which will come late next month
