  • The 79-year-old, who was a friend of the Queen and Prince Charles, has died
  • Death comes just weeks after the passing of his wife, who died on November 28
  • Lady Vestey, 71, was one of the Duke of Sussex's godmothers
  • The couple joined the Queen and Prince Charles in the Royal Box at Cheltenham

Samuel George Armstrong Vestey, 3rd Baron Vestey, GCVO, GCStJ, DL (19 March 1941 – February 2021) was a British peer, landowner, and businessman. Lord Vestey served as Master of the Horse to The Queen. His death was announced on 4 February 2021.[1]

He was part of the family dynasty which founded and still runs the multinational corporation Vestey Holdings

Samuel Vestey was born on 19 March 1941, the son of Captain Hon. William Howarth Vestey, a member of the Scots Guards who was killed in action in 1944 during the Second World War and Lady Vestey (1918–2011) (née Pamela Armstrong). He was a great-grandson of the celebrated opera singer Dame Nellie Melba on his mother's side.[2] He was educated at Eton College, before attending Sandhurst and serving as a Lieutenant in the Scots Guards.

Vestey was the chairman of the Meat Training Council from 1991 to 1995, before becoming chairman of the Vestey Group (now Vestey Holdings) in 1995. He was also a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Butchers. In 1980, A Sunday Times investigation revealed that he and his cousin Edmund were found to have paid just £10 in tax on the family business's £2.3m profit made by the Dewhurst chain.[3][4]

Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was admitted as an Honorary Freeman of the Company in March 1976, continuing a link with the Monarchy that started with King James I in 1605; she took a constant interest in "Her Butchers". Following the Queen Mother's death in March 2002, her granddaughter, the Princess Royal was admitted to the Honorary Freedom of the Company (February 2003). Like the Queen Mother, the Princess Royal takes a keen interest in Company affairs, serving as its Master

The sole single from Setting Sons, "The Eton Rifles", became the group's first top 10 UK hit, peaking at No. 3. The Setting Sun (斜陽, Shayō) is a Japanese novel ...
