Joe and Jill Biden were left awkwardly standing in the cold outside White House on Inauguration Day when doors to their new residence didn't open because chief usher had been fired five hours earlier

• With the world watching on, President Biden and his wife Jill walked up the steps of their new home for the first time on Wednesday
• The couple posed for photos outside the large wooden doors of the North Portico, waiving to the crowd as a military band played ‘Hail to the Chief’ nearby
• They then embraced one another, before turning to venture inside
• However, the doors didn't open - which is reportedly a breach of protocol
• For an awkward period of around 10 seconds, Biden stares puzzlingly at the door before turning back to shoot a confused look
• Eventually the doors swing open, though it’s unclear whether Jill and Joe were forced to open them themselves, or whether someone on the inside did
• It remains unclear exactly what caused the delay, but the firing of the chief usher of the White House, Timothy Harleth, likely had a part to play

 (CNN)The Bidens moved quickly on Wednesday to fire White House chief usher Timothy Harleth, who was installed by the Trumps, two sources with knowledge have confirmed to CNN.

Harleth was hired by Melania Trump in 2017 to fill the important role of chief usher. Harleth came to the White House from Trump International Hotel DC, where he was rooms manager.

First lady Jill Biden's office did not immediately respond to a CNN request for comment.

Harleth took the place of Angella Reid, who was hired during the Obama administration. Reid made history when she took the job in 2011 as the first woman to serve in the position. She was previously the general manager at the Ritz Carlton in Pentagon City, just outside Washington.

She was let go by the Trumps a few months after they took over the White House.

Prior to working at Mr. Trump’s hotel, Mr. Harleth served in various management positions at the Mandarin Oriental in Washington and New York, including director of rooms and director of front office operations.
