In October 2001, Watkins traveled to Manila in the Philippines and married his wife three weeks after arriving. Watkins began moving to the Philippines in 2004, and started living there permanently in 2007.[2][3] Watkins splits his time between a pig farm outside of Manila and a condominium in the city.[2][3]
In January 2020, the Investigations Division of the Philippines Bureau of Immigration (BI) designated Watkins an "undesirable alien". According to ABC News, this is an administrative (not criminal) determination that a person is a "risk to the public interest", and although it indicates a person is able to be deported, it is up to the commissioner of the bureau whether to pursue deportation.[1] The immigration records obtained by ABC News noted that Watkins "is the owner and operator of 8chan, a hate filled forum/website which hosts trolling and serves as go-to resource for violent extremists and white supremacists". According to Watkins' brother-in-law, Watkins sold his pig farm and in August 2020 returned to the United States. If he does not return to the Philippines by January 31, 2021 to appeal the BI's designation, he will be denied reentry to the country.[1]
Watkins has a son, Ronald "Ron" Watkins, who serves as 8chan's site administrator.[2][8]
Watkins' interests include yoga and fountain pens, and he has recorded videos on YouTube under the name "Watkins Xerxes" about these subjects.[2] He also uses his YouTube channel to sing hymns, read Bible verses, commend President Donald Trump, and allude to QAnon conspiracy theories by warning against the "deep state".[35]
Fredrick Brennan (born 1994) is an American software developer and type designer who founded the imageboard website 8chan in 2013, before going on to repudiate it in 2019. Following 8chan's surge in popularity in 2014, largely due to many Gamergate proponents migrating to the site from 4chan, Brennan moved to the Philippines to work for Jim Watkins, who provided hosting services to 8chan and later became the site's owner.
Brennan cut ties with 8chan in 2016 and with Watkins in 2018. Brennan has since become an outspoken critic of both 8chan and Watkins, and has actively battled to try to take 8chan offline. Brennan is also an outspoken critic of the QAnon conspiracy theory, which centers on 8chan posts by an anonymous figure named "Q", and Brennan has researched who may be behind the Q identity.
