Monahan received his B.S. summa cum laude from Fairfield University and M.D. magna cum laude from the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He trained in internal medicine and later hematology and medical oncology (HMO) at National Naval Medical Center (NNMC).^[4] He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology. 

Fairfield University is a private Jesuit university in Fairfield, Connecticut. It was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1942, and today is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities. As of 2017, the university had about 4,100 full-time undergraduate students and 1,100 graduate students, including full-time and part-time.

 Georgetown is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher education in the United States. The Jesuits have participated in the university's academic life, both as scholars and as administrators, since 1805. However, the university has always been governed independently of the church, and the majority of Georgetown students are not Catholic.^[9][10]
