【ロンドン＝岡部伸】ホンダが英南部スウィンドン工場を閉鎖することに英国のクラーク民間企業・エネルギー・産業戦略相は１９日、「スウィンドンと英国に壊滅的な決定だ」との声明を発表、失望感をあらわにした。

フィナンシャル・タイムズ紙が１面トップで報じたほかＢＢＣ放送もニュース番組トップで伝え、欧州連合（ＥＵ）離脱をめぐり、英国経済への影響を懸念する声が高まっている。

クラーク氏は、工場閉鎖は「技術力があり、献身的な数千人の熟練した従業員、家族、部品メーカー関係者らに厳しい打撃だ」と述べ、雇用維持に向けて作業部会を立ち上げる考えを表明。作業部会は国会議員、労働組合の代表者などで構成し、労働者の技術と専門知識を保ち、新たな職に移行させることを目標にすると述べた。

英商工会議所も、自動車産業は「英製造業の先導者」で、工場閉鎖が地域や雇用に与える影響を懸念するとの声明を発表した。

Greg Clark was born in Middlesbrough and attended St Peter's Roman Catholic School in South Bank. His father and grandfather were milkmen running the family business, John Clark and Sons,^[9] while his mother worked at Sainsbury's.^[10]
Clark read Economics at Magdalene College, Cambridge. He joined the Social Democratic Party while at Cambridge and was an executive member of its national student wing, Social Democrat Youth and Students (SDYS) and, in 1987, president of Cambridge University Social Democrats. He then studied at the London School of Economics, where he was awarded his PhD in 1992 with a thesis entitled, The effectiveness of incentive payment systems: an empirical test of individualism as a boundary condition.^[11]

Early in the Second World War, a Ministry of Aircraft Production shadow factory and airfield were built for Phillips & Powis Aircraft Ltd, and 1,090 Miles Master training aircraft were built there. Short Brothers Ltd also used another part of the airfield for final assembly and testing of locally-built Short Stirling bombers. Vickers-Armstrongs-Supermarine acquired the site later in the war and produced Supermarine aircraft including Spitfire, Seafire, Attacker, Swift and Scimitar there until the early 1960s.
In 1985, Honda bought and closed the airfield and reassigned it to car manufacture.^[5]The principal book storage facility for Oxford's Bodleian Libraries has been located on South Marston Industrial Estate since 2010.^[6]

In 2012, plans were announced to digitize, in collaboration with the Bodleian Library, a million pages of material from the Vatican Library. A grant was provided by the London-based Polonsky Foundation.^[34]On 20 March 2014, the Holy See announced that NTT Data Corporation and the Library concluded an agreement to digitize approximately 3,000 of the Library's manuscripts within four years.^[35] NTT is donating the equipment and technicians, estimated to be worth 18 million Euros.^[36] It noted that there is the possibility of subsequently digitizing another 79,000 of the Library's holdings. These will be high-definition images available on the Library's Internet site. Storage for the holdings will be on a three petabyte server provided by EMC.^[37] It is expected that the initial phase will take 4 years.^[38]DigiVatLib is the name of the Vatican Library's digital library service. It provides free access to the Vatican Library’s digitized collections of manuscripts and incunabula.^[39]The scanning of documents is impacted by the material used to produce the texts. Books using gold and silver in the illuminations require special scanning equipment.^[22] Digital copies are being stored in the CIFS file format.^[15]

 Vickers-Armstrongs Limited was a British engineering conglomerate formed by the merger of the assets of Vickers Limited and Sir W G Armstrong Whitworth & Company in 1927. The majority of the company was nationalised in the 1960s and 1970s, with the remainder being divested as Vickers plc in 1977.
