日本食レストランを経営していた韓人夫婦が脱税容疑で摘発されて、およそ100万ドルに達する罰金刑が言い渡された。

連邦司法省は、ミシガン州オーチャードレイク「スシ・サムライ」日本食店オーナーの韓人チャン某（46）さん夫婦に、98万479ドルの罰金刑が下されたと明らかにした。彼らは15日の公判で、追加罰金と実刑を宣告される可能性がある。

検察によると、「スシ・サムライ」という店を経営してきたこの夫婦は、ゼファー（zapper）と呼ばれるコンピュータプログラムを利用して、顧客の支払い記録を削除する手法で売り上げを偽った。2012～2016年の4年間では250万ドルの売上報告を怠った。

今年の4月に起訴された彼らは、10月の人定尋問で64件の重罪容疑について有罪を認めた。

ビル・シュエット司法長官は、「顧客が支払った売上税を横領した疑いで、彼らに強い処罰が下された」とし、「私益のために税法に違反する行為が、厳しい結果としてかえってくることを示す事例になるだろう」と強調した。

The couple remains free on bond pending sentencing, which is scheduled for Nov. 30 in front of Oakland County Circuit Judge Phyllis McMillen.

The couple still face additional charges:

One count of embezzlement over $100,000, a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine up to $50,000, or 3 times the amount embezzled, whichever is greater.
One count of conspiracy to embezzle over $100,000, a felony punishable by up to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.
One count of possession of an automated sales suppression device, a felony punishable by 1-5 years.
59 counts of filing false monthly sales tax returns, a felony punishable by up to 5 years and/or a $5,000 fine.
Five counts of filing false joint income tax returns, punishable by up to 5 years and/or a $5,000 fine.
The restaurant remained open Friday. According to its website, Dong Chang learned to make sushi in his native Korea before moving to New York City to open a restaurant. He and his wife moved to Michigan to be closer to family and opened Sushi Samurai in 2002.
