A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Japan near Fukushima.
Details of the extent of the damage have not yet emerged regarding the quake which hit 281km South East of Kamaishi.
The depth of the earthquake, which struck at 2.37am local time, was measured at 10km.

水位逆転で汚染水漏れのおそれも

東京電力福島第一原子力発電所で周辺の地下水の水位が建屋内にたまっている高濃度の汚染水の水位より一時、低い状態になっていたことが分かりました。
水位が逆転したことで汚染水が漏れ出した恐れがあり、東京電力が当時の状況を詳しく調べています。
福島第一原発では１号機から４号機の建屋周辺の地下水をくみ上げる井戸のうち、ことし４月以降、新設された６か所で水位計の設定に誤りがあり、実際の地下水の水位はこれまで把握していたよりもおよそ７０センチ低かったことが分かりました。
建屋周辺の地下水の水位が建屋内の地下にたまっている高濃度の汚染水の水位を下回ると汚染水が外に漏れ出すおそれがあります。
このため東京電力が実際の水位を調べたところ、１号機の建屋周辺の井戸１か所で少なくともことし５月１７日から２１日までに８回にわたって水位の逆転があったということです。
水位は１時間ごとの計測データで、逆転の幅は最大でおよそ２センチだったということですが、逆転した状態がどれだけ続いていたかは分かっていません。
東京電力はいまのところ周辺の地下水に含まれる放射性物質の濃度に異常はなかったとしたうえで、引き続き汚染水が漏れ出していないかなど当時の状況を詳しく調べています。
