メキシコ沖で７日深夜（日本時間８日午後）に起きたマグニチュード（Ｍ）８・１の巨大地震で、震源地に近い南部オアハカ州フチタンでは、市庁舎など３分の１の建物が損壊した。死者はメキシコで６１人に上り、今後さらに増える可能性が高い。下敷きになった人の捜索や救出作業が、発生から３日目を迎え、夜を徹して続いた。

記者は９日午前（日本時間１０日午前０時過ぎ）、フチタンに入った。市内では、亡くなったアルバ・デラクルスさん（３７）の埋葬が行われていた。夫のマリアノ・モラレスさん（３６）によると、妻は地震が起きた時、３人の子供を助けようとして子供を外に押し出し、自分が天井の下敷きになったという。「悲しみで言葉がない」と話した。

フチタンの西約１１０キロにあるカマロンヤウテペック村では、数軒の家が崩壊。雑貨店員のアマンダ・ガルシアさん（２４）は「激しい揺れで目が覚めた。２階から階段を下りることもできず、助けを求めて神に祈った。停電してとても恐ろしかった」と地震が起きた時の状況を振り返った。店内の商品はすべて棚から落ちたという。

ペニャニエト大統領は８日、フチタンを視察。政府によると、オアハカ州で４５人、隣接するチアパス州で１２人、タバスコ州で４人が死亡した。オアハカ州で少なくとも２５０人がけがをしたという。

ＡＰ通信などによると、フチタンでは３６人が死亡。半壊した市庁舎のがれきの中に地元の警官が生き埋めになっているとの情報がある。市内の３分の１の建物が倒壊したか、住めない状態になっており、被災者が生き埋めになったとみられる場所では、警察や兵士が救助犬や重機を使い、捜索や救助活動に当たった。
