Charles Kushner (born May 16, 1954) is an American real estate developer and philanthropist. He founded Kushner Companies won the Ernst & Young New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year award in 1999. In 2005, he was convicted of illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering and served one year in prison. After his release he resumed his career in real estate.
Kushner was born on May 16, 1954[1] and grew up in Elizabeth, New Jersey, with his elder brother, Murray Kushner.[2][3] His parents were Holocaust survivors who came to America from Poland in 1949.[4][5] Kushner's father worked as a construction worker, builder and real estate investor. [2]

Kushner graduated from Hofstra Law School in 1979.[6]
In 1985 Kushner began managing his father's portfolio of 4,000 New Jersey apartments.[2][3] He founded Kushner Companies, headquartered in Florham Park, New Jersey and became its chairman.[1][3] In 1999, Kushner won the Ernst & Young New Jersey Entrepreneur of the Year award. At the time, Kushner Companies had grown to over 10,000 residential apartments, a home building business, commercial and industrial properties and a community bank.[7][8]
In the summer of 2004 Kushner was fined $508,900 by the Federal Election Commission for mishandling of campaign contributions.[9] In 2005, following an investigation by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of New Jersey,[10] Kushner was convicted of making illegal campaign contributions, tax evasion and witness tampering.[11] The U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, Chris Christie, negotiated a plea agreement and Kushner was sentenced to two years in prison and released after one year. [12][13][14][15] As a result of his convictions, Kushner was suspended and disbarred from the practice of law in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.[7][16][17][18]
In early 2007, Kushner bought the building at 666 Fifth Avenue, New York City, for US$1.8 billion.[19]

Kushner is a major donor to the Democratic Party.[10] and serves on the boards of Touro College, Stern College for Women, Rabbinical College of America and the United Jewish Communities.[20] Kushner is a noted Jewish American philanthropist and has donated to Harvard University, Stern College, the St. Barnabas Medical Center and United Cerebral Palsy.[20] Kushner built two schools, Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy and Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School, in Livingston, New Jersey and named them after his parents.[2][21][20]

Political activity

Between 1991-2006, Kushner was a contributor to the Democratic Party: he contributed over $100,000 to various campaigns in this time period.[32]

Donald Trump presidential campaign

From the outset of the presidential campaign of his father-in-law Donald Trump, Kushner was the architect of Trump's digital, online and social media campaigns, enlisting talent from Silicon Valley to run a 100 person social-media team dubbed 'Project Alamo'.[33] Kushner has also helped as a speechwriter and was tasked with working to establish a plan for Trump's White House transition team should he be elected.[34] He was for a time seen as the de facto campaign manager, succeeding Corey Lewandowski, who was fired in part on Kushner's recommendation in June 2016,[35] He has been intimately involved with campaign strategy, coordinating Trump's visit in late August to Mexico.[36] Kushner's "sprawling digital fundraising database and social media campaign" has been described as "the locus of his father-in-law’s presidential bid".[37]

On July 5, 2016 Kushner penned an open letter in the New York Observer in response to a Tweet released by the Trump campaign containing allegedly antisemitic imagery. He was responding to his own paper's editorial by Dana Schwartz criticizing Kushner's involvements with the Trump campaign.[38] In the letter, Kushner noted, "In my opinion, accusations like “racist” and “anti-Semite” are being thrown around with a carelessness that risks rendering these words meaningless."[39]
