Saifullah Ojaki believed to have joined IS with family and children: Reports
SM Nadim Mahmud from Japan, bdnews24.com
Published: 2016-07-21 21:01:12.0 BdST Updated: 2016-07-22 10:27:16.0 BdSTBangladeshi expatriate in Japan Saifulla Ojaki, who figures on the list of missing people prepared by law enforcing agencies, may have gone over to Syria with wife and children to join the IS, suspect Japanese sleuths.
His name appeared on the first list of missing individuals released by law enforcers after a terror attack on a cafe in Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave, Gulshan, on July 1.
Investigations revealed Md Saifullah Ojaki to be actually Brahmanbarhia resident Sojit Chandra Debnath, son of Janardan Debnath.
Sojit converted to Islam after going to Japan in 2001 after passing his SSC and HSC with distinction from the Sylhet Cadet College.
He married a Japanese woman, secured Japanese citizenship, and has four sons and a daughter.
His ties with his family back home snapped following his conversion to Islam.
He did his PhD and began teaching as an assistant professor of business administration at the Ritsumeikan University in Japan.
But the university authorities sacked him because of absence since January this year, reports The Japan Times.

Kyodo News has said, quoting intelligence sources, that Saifulla Ojaki had left with his wife and children for Syria, via Europe.
The news agency says he had tried to enter to enter Syria through Turkey on May 15, 2015, but failed. He subsequently returned to Japan and was interrogated by the Japanese police.
But Ojaki’s links with any terrorist group could not be established.
Two months later, he again went off to Europe with the ostensible intension of ‘helping refugees’ from Syria.
Kyodo News reports that Ojaki then went over to a IS-dominated region of Syria from Europe with his wife and children.
In IS under Japanese influence?
The residents of Nabinagar in Brahmanbarhia knew Sojit to be meritorious and of a quiet nature. The members of his family and the local inhabitants had no inkling of his links with militancy.
He had come to Bangladesh 14 months ago to meet his father and mother at the house of the local Union chairman but left no cause for suspicion.
But businessman Janardan Debnath learnt that his son was missing after his name appeared on the list of untraceable individuals.
Japan’s archive.org has a research paper in Sojit’s name.
Communication journal ‘Proceda’ had an essay by him in its July 2015 edition. It is believed he came in touch with the terror group, IS, soon after this.
Intelligence sources in Japan say Saifullah Ojaki joined the IS after coming win contact former Doshisha University teacher Hasan Ko Nakata.
Japanese police say Nakata has gone into hiding and a search is on to find him.
Hasan Ko Nakata
An intelligence officer, preferring anonymity, told bdnews24.com that Nakata, who converted to Islam in 1979, had been working for IS.
He said police had been looking for Saifullah Ojaki, too, for being Nakata’s accomplice.
Nakata, a Tokyo University graduate and a Cairo University PhD, had joined Doshisha University as a teacher in the department of Islamic studies.
Nakata also served as the Japanese ambassador to Saudi Arabia. Media reports say he joined the Hizb-ut Tahrir once his diplomatic assignment ended. Social media is said contain several proofs of his involvement in various activities of the group.
The Japanese government had sent Nakata to Syria to mediate the release of two Japanese journalists taken hostage by the IS on Jan 15, 2015.
Later, a Reuters report quoted him as saying that Japan’s foreign ministry had not been adequately forthcoming despite his efforts to make the ministry and the IS’s Chechen fighter Omar Gurbar reach and ‘understanding’.
Subsequently, the research body, IS Study Group, managed to lay it hands on several photographs showing Nakata’s involvement with the IS.
“We have information on Saifullah Ojaki’s meeting with Nakata in Indonesia on Oct 14 last year,” said an intelligence officer.
