【7月18日 AFP】英国のエリザベス女王（Queen Elizabeth II）の夫で、失言癖のあるフィリップ殿下（Prince Philip、94）が16日、地域センターを訪問した際に女性団体をからかうような発言をした。
女王と一緒に「チャドウェル健康アジア女性ネットワーク」（Chadwell Heath Asian Women's Network）」の会合を訪れたフィリップ殿下は、会の創設者であるヌスラット・ザミール（Nusrat Zamir）さん（35）に「あなたがたは、誰のすねをかじっているのかな？」と尋ねた。
「すねをかじる」ことを英語で「スポンジ・オフ」とも表現するが、王室の側近が後で説明したところによると、フィリップ殿下は、ザミールさんたちから女王夫妻にスポンジケーキが贈られたことにかけて、だじゃれを言ったのだという。
ザミールさんは殿下の発言を冗談と解釈し、その後取材陣に対し「私たちはみんな結婚しているので、夫たちのすねをかじっているということになりますね。殿下はからかっていただけですよ。私も夫のことを『お財布』と呼んだりしますしね」とコメントした。
ザミールさんによれば、フィリップ殿下からはさらに「集まってゴシップ話をするのかな？」とも質問されたという。 ザミールさんはそれも冗談だったと述べ、「よくある質問です。多くの人から殿下がおっしゃったようなことを言われますが、私たちはたくさんの仕事をしています」と語った。
またフィリップ殿下はこの訪問中、会場だったチャドウェル地域センターのアン・エストレア（Anne Estlea）センター長に対しては「コミュニティー」という言葉を使いすぎだとからかい、またゲストの一人、マーティン・ショー（Martin Shaw）さんのことも冷やかした。
ショーさんは「自分は資金集めの専門家だと申し上げたところ、殿下に『友達は残っているかね？』と聞かれたので『そんなに残っていません』と答えました」と語った。 フィリップ殿下は即興の発言で過去に何度もメディアをにぎわし、時に物議を醸してきた。1986年の中国訪問の際には英国人留学生たちと面談した際に「ここにいればいるほど目が細くなってしまうぞ」と声をかけ、98年には、パプアニューギニアを旅した学生に「よく食べられずに帰ってきたね」と話し掛けたこともある。(c)AFP

THE RELATIVES of Frederick J Want, who had connections to Romford, are being sought after a picture was found of him as a prisoner of war in World War II.
The photograph, taken in the Changi camp, Singapore, shows the two emaciated British serviceman shortly after Japan surrendered in 1945.
Chris McBrien, of Aberdeen, found the picture when he was searching for information about the other man in the picture, Charles Freeman, for a friend.
Mr McBrien, a former air force serviceman himself, carried out further searches and discovered that Mr Want had two daughters, Brenda and Rosemary, and that one of them married a policeman who was from Romford.
“The photo was on a New Zealand website that has since gone defunct,” Mr McBrien said. “I’m sure it’s the sort of thing that the family would be interested in.”
The Royal Hospital in Chelsea said that Mr Want was blinded in one eye and deafened by a blast while on service, and served as a gardener in Changi. He died in 1988 as a Chelsea Pensioner.
His daughter Brenda, who would be around 68-years-old, was married to an Alan C Newman who was born in Romford in 1935. Their daughter Lisa was born in 1969.
