Amal Ramzi Clooney (née Alamuddin, Arabic: أمل علم الدين; born 3 February 1978) is a London-based Lebanese-British lawyer, activist, and author. She is a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers, specializing in international law, criminal law, human rights, and extradition.[1] Her clients include Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, in his fight against extradition.[2] She has also represented the former prime minister of Ukraine, Yulia Tymoshenko.[3] She is married to American actor George Clooney.
Clooney was born in Beirut, Lebanon. During the 1980s, when the Lebanese Civil War was in full scale, the Alamuddin family left Lebanon for London and settled in Gerrards Cross.[4] She was two years old at the time.[5] Her father, Ramzi Alamuddin, who received his MBA at the American University of Beirut and was the owner of COMET travel agency, returned to Lebanon in 1991.[6][7] He originally hails from a prominent Lebanese Druze family from the town of Baakline, a village in the Chouf district where many Lebanese Druze live.[5][8][9][10][11][12] Her mother, Bariaa Alamuddin (née Miknass), is a foreign editor of the Pan-Arab newspaper al-Hayat and a founder of the public relations company International Communication Experts, which is part of a larger company that specializes in celebrity guest bookings, publicity photography, and event promotion.[5][13] Bariaa is a Sunni Muslim from Tripoli, Lebanon, where a significant community of Lebanese Sunni Muslims live.[14][15]
George Timothy Clooney (born May 6, 1961) is an American actor, writer, producer, director and activist. He has received three Golden Globe Awards for his work as an actor and two Academy Awards, one for acting and the other for producing.
Clooney was born in Lexington, Kentucky, in 1961.[10][11][12] His mother, Nina Bruce (née Warren),[13] was a beauty queen and city councilwoman. His father, Nick Clooney, is a former anchorman, game show host, and hosted AMC for five years in the late 1990s.[14] Clooney has Irish, German, and English ancestry.[15] His maternal four times great-grandmother, Mary Ann Sparrow, was the half-sister of Nancy Hanks (who was the mother of President Abraham Lincoln).[16][17] Clooney has an older sister named Adelia (known as Ada).[18] His aunt was the famed cabaret singer and actress Rosemary Clooney.[19] Through Rosemary, his cousins include actors Miguel Ferrer, Rafael Ferrer, and Gabriel Ferrer, who is married to singer Debby Boone.[20]
Clooney was raised a strict Roman Catholic,[21] but said in 2006 that he does not know if he believes in Heaven, or even God.[22] He has said, "Yes, we were Catholic, big time, whole family, whole group."[23] He began his education at the Blessed Sacrament School in Fort Mitchell, Kentucky. Spending part of his childhood in Ohio, he attended St. Michael's School in Columbus; then Western Row Elementary School (a public school) in Mason, Ohio, from 1968 to 1974; and St. Susanna School in Mason, where he served as an altar boy. The Clooneys moved back to Kentucky when George was midway through the seventh grade.[24] In middle school, Clooney developed Bell's palsy, a condition that partially paralyzes the face. The malady went away within a year. In an interview with Larry King, he stated that "yes, it goes away. It takes about nine months to go away. It was the first year of high school, which was a bad time for having half your face paralyzed."[23]
