WASHINGTON, DC – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) today issued the following statement after Prime Minister Shinzo Abe of Japan addressed a joint meeting of Congress: “It was my honor and privilege today to welcome Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to the Capitol as the first Japanese leader to address a joint meeting of the United States Congress. His address honored the American people, and we are truly grateful for his tribute to our fallen heroes of World War II. “As much as today is about history, it is also about the future of hope that lies ahead, a future based on shared values and common aspirations. We seek the best opportunities for our workers and businesses, which is why we are pursuing lower trade barriers and deeper economic ties. We seek peace and security for our children, which is why we are committed to strengthening our strategic partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region. 平成２９年３月１４日、安倍総理は、総理大臣官邸でアメリカ合衆国のジョン・ベイナー前連邦下院議長への勲章伝達式を行いました。
総理は、挨拶の中で次のように述べました。
「ベイナー前連邦下院議長は、誰よりも国を思うステーツマンであり、下院議長としてのリーダーシップ、そして連邦下院議員としての長年の献身に心より敬意を表します。
ベイナー前議長は、日米関係の促進のために御尽力され、ひいては、アジア太平洋地域の平和と繁栄に多大なる功績を挙げられました。特に、日米同盟の真の理解者である前議長の御協力により、平成２７年の私の訪米時に、日本国総理大臣として初めて連邦議会上下両院合同会議において演説を行うことが実現したことは、特筆に値すると考えています。
ベイナー前議長が、長きにわたり日本国とアメリカ合衆国との間の関係強化及び友好親善に寄与された御功績に対して、今般、天皇陛下は旭日大綬章を贈与されました。
本日、ベイナー前議長に対して、この勲章を伝達することを大変光栄に思うとともに、私自身の喜びとするところです。心よりお祝い申し上げます。」
