On October 31, 2014, the VSS Enterprise crashed in the Mojave Desert near Cantil, California, United States.[3][5][6] The aircraft was performing a test flight from the Mojave Air and Space Port in which it was dropped from the WhiteKnightTwo carrier aircraft. It was the aircraft's first powered flight in nine months. The purpose of the flight was to test a redesigned rocket motor. The flight was the aircraft's 55th, and its 35th free flight. The names of the pilots have not been released. One observer said, "SpaceShipTwo dropped. From what I could tell, motor fired and then stopped then fired again."[7] The space plane then broke apart, creating a two-mile-long debris field. Witnesses reported seeing parachutes before the aircraft crashed. The pilot was transported to a hospital with serious injuries, while the co-pilot was killed.[8] The carrier aircraft, WhiteKnightTwo, landed safely.[9]
Cantil is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California.[1] It is located 6 miles (9.7 km) southwest of Saltdale,[2] at an elevation of 2018 feet (615 m).[1] Cantil is located in the northern Antelope Valley in the Fremont Valley section.
Cantil was founded as a station on the Nevada and California Railroad in 1908 or 1909 when the line was extended from Owens Lake to Mojave.[2] The name is Spanish for "steep rock", and is one of a series of "C" names chosen for this section of the line including Cambio, Cinco, and Ceneda.[3] The first post office opened in 1916.[2]
Its zip code is 93519 and its area code 760. Cantil is near the home of the former Honda Proving Center of California (HPCC), a test track used for testing new car models and motorcycles. Honda closed the test facility in April 2010. The large facility is for sale and plans for the test track have not been revealed.

Cantil is also home to the Red Rock Elementary School and the Red Rock Community Day School, both of which help students who were not successful in the regular school system.
On October 31, 2014, The Virgin Galactic SpaceShipTwo VSS Enterprise crashed in the Mojave Desert near Cantil, killing one of the two pilots.
