トランプ氏、関税めぐりカナダのトルドー首相と電話会談で激しい応酬　「焼き打ち」にも言及

（ＣＮＮ） 米政権が先月カナダの鉄鋼・アルミ製品に課した関税をめぐり、トランプ米大統領とカナダのトルドー首相が電話会談の場で激しい応酬を繰り広げていたことが７日までに分かった。事情に詳しい複数の情報筋が明かした。

電話会談ではトランプ氏が１８１２年勃発の米英戦争に言及し、カナダはホワイトハウスを焼き打ちにしたと主張する場面もあったという。



情報筋によると、トルドー氏はトランプ氏に、どういった理屈で関税賦課を「国家安全保障」の問題として正当化できるのかと追及した。これに対し、トランプ氏は米英戦争に触れ、「あなた方はホワイトハウスを焼き打ちにしたのではなかったか」と返したという。

ただ、米英戦争でホワイトハウスを焼き打ちにしたのは英国軍だった。歴史家によれば、英国によるワシントンへの攻撃は、後のカナダ領であるオンタリオ州ヨークを米国が攻撃したことに対する報復とされる。カナダは当時、英国の植民地だった。

１８１４年８月２４日に起きたワシントン焼き打ちをめぐっては、当時の大統領夫人だったドリー・マディソンがジョージ・ワシントン初代大統領の肖像画を避難させたとする逸話も有名だ。

焼き打ちに関する発言が冗談として受け止められたかどうかについて、情報筋の１人は、カナダや米国の労働者に対する影響を考えれば笑い事ではないだろうとの見方を示した

今回の件に関してホワイトハウスのコメントは得られていない。

カドロー国家経済会議（ＮＥＣ）委員長は米国とカナダの関係について聞かれ、短期的な緊張はあると認めつつも、両国関係は「非常に良好」との見方を示した。

カナダのトルドー首相は、新たな関税を正当化するため米国が「国家安全保障」を持ち出したことを批判。米ＮＢＣテレビの番組では、「我々が米国に対する安全保障上の脅威だという見方は率直にいって、無礼であり、受け入れがたい」としている。

Briefly revived as the State of Hanover in 1946, the state was subsequently merged with some smaller states to form the current state of Lower Saxony in West Germany, later Germany.
