Rebekah Mercer is an American heiress, foundation director, and major Republican[2][3] donor who oversees the day-to-day operations of philanthropic and political projects for the Mercer family. She began managing the family foundation when the Mercers started getting involved in conservative causes.[2][4][5][6][7][8] Her father, billionaire Robert Mercer, said in November 2017 that he had sold his stake in the far-right news site Breitbart to his daughters.[9] In August 2018, she co-founded the social networking service Parler.[10][11]

Cambridge Analytica Ltd (CA) was a British political consulting firm that was involved in influencing hundreds of elections globally and that came to prominence through the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal. It was started in 2013[6] as a subsidiary of the private intelligence company and self-described "global election management agency" SCL Group by long-time SCL executives Nigel Oakes, Alexander Nix and Alexander Oakes, with Nix as CEO.[6] The company had close ties to the Conservative Party (UK), the British royal family and the British military.[7] The firm maintained offices in London, New York City, and Washington, DC.[8] The company closed operations in 2018 in the course of the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal, although related firms still exist.[9]

Cambridge Analytica was established as a subsidiary of the private intelligence company SCL Group that was active in military and political arenas. The men who ran Cambridge Analytica and its parent SCL were described as having close ties to the Conservative Party (UK), royalty and the British military.[7] Cambridge Analytica (SCL USA) was incorporated in January 2015 with its registered office in Westferry Circus, London and just one staff member, its director and CEO Alexander James Ashburner Nix (also appointed in January 2015).[10] Nix was also the director of nine similar companies sharing the same registered offices in London, including Firecrest technologies, Emerdata and six SCL Group companies including "SCL elections limited".[11] Nigel Oakes, known as the former boyfriend of Lady Helen Windsor, had founded the predecessor SCL Group in the 1990s, and in 2005 Oakes established SCL Group together with his brother Alexander Oakes and Alexander Nix; SCL Group was the parent company of Cambridge Analytica.[12] Conservative minister and MP Sir Geoffrey Pattie was the founding chairman of SCL; Lord Ivar Mountbatten also joined Oakes as a director of the company.[7] As a result of the Facebook–Cambridge Analytica data scandal Nix was removed as CEO and replaced by Julian Wheatland before the company closed.[13] Several of the company's executives were Old Etonians.[14]

The company's owners included several of the Conservative Party's largest donors such as billionaire Vincent Tchenguiz, former British Conservative minister Jonathan Marland, Baron Marland[15] and the family of American hedge fund manager Robert Mercer.[16][17] The company combined misappropriation of digital assets, data mining, data brokerage, and data analysis with strategic communication during electoral processes.[18][19] While its parent SCL had focused on influencing elections in developing countries since the 1990s, Cambridge focused more on the western world, including the United Kingdom and the United States; CEO Alexander Nix has said CA was involved in 44 U.S. political races in 2014.[20] In 2015, CA performed data analysis services for Ted Cruz's presidential campaign.[17] In 2016, CA worked for Donald Trump's presidential campaign[21] as well as for Leave.EU (one of the organisations campaigning in the United Kingdom's referendum on European Union membership). CA's role in those campaigns has been controversial and is the subject of ongoing inquiries in both countries.[22][23][24] Political scientists question CA's claims about the effectiveness of its methods of targeting voters.[25][26]

In March 2018, multiple media outlets broke news of Cambridge Analytica's business practices. The New York Times and The Observer reported that the company had acquired and used personal data about Facebook users from an external researcher who had told Facebook he was collecting it for academic purposes.[27] Shortly afterwards, Channel 4 News aired undercover investigative videos showing Nix boasting about using prostitutes, bribery sting operations, and honey traps to discredit politicians on whom it conducted opposition research, and saying that the company "ran all of (Donald Trump's) digital campaign". In response to the media reports, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) of the UK pursued a warrant to search the company's servers.[28][29] Facebook banned Cambridge Analytica from advertising on its platform, saying that it had been deceived.[30][31] On 23 March 2018, the British High Court granted the ICO a warrant to search Cambridge Analytica's London offices.[32] As a result, Nix was suspended as CEO, and replaced by Julian Wheatland.[33]

The personal data of up to 87 million[34] Facebook users were acquired via the 270,000 Facebook users who used a Facebook app called "This Is Your Digital Life."[35] By giving this third-party app permission to acquire their data, back in 2015, this also gave the app access to information on the user's friends network; this resulted in the data of about 87 million users, the majority of whom had not explicitly given Cambridge Analytica permission to access their data, being collected. The app developer breached Facebook's terms of service by giving the data to Cambridge Analytica.[36]

On 1 May 2018, Cambridge Analytica and its parent company filed for insolvency proceedings and closed operations.[37][38] Alexander Tayler, a former director for Cambridge Analytica, was appointed director of Emerdata on 28 March 2018.[39] Rebekah Mercer, Jennifer Mercer, Alexander Nix and Johnson Chun Shun Ko [zh], who has links to American businessman Erik Prince, are in leadership positions at Emerdata.[40][41] The Russo brothers are producing an upcoming film on Cambridge Analytica.[42][43][16] In 2019 the Federal Trade Commission filed an administrative complaint against Cambridge Analytica for misuse of data.[44] In 2020, the British Information Commissioner's Office closed a three-year inquiry into the company, concluded that Cambridge Analytica was "not involved" in the 2016 Brexit referendum and found no evidence for Russia's alleged interference during the campaign.[45]

Publicly, parent company SCL Group called itself a "global election management agency",[46] Politico reported it was known for involvement "in military disinformation campaigns to social media branding and voter targeting".[17] SCL gained work on a large number of campaigns for the US and UK governments' War on Terror advancing their model of behavioral conflict during the 2000s.[47] SCL's involvement in the political world has been primarily in the developing world where it has been used by the military and politicians to study and manipulate public opinion and political will. Slate writer Sharon Weinberger compared one of SCL's hypothetical test scenarios to fomenting a coup.[17]

Among the investors in Cambridge Analytica were some of the Conservative Party's largest donors such as billionaire Vincent Tchenguiz, former Conservative minister Jonathan Marland, Baron Marland, Roger Gabb,[48] the family of American hedge fund manager Robert Mercer,[15] and Steve Bannon. A minimum of 15 million dollars has been invested into the company by Mercer, according to The New York Times.[49] Bannon's stake in the company was estimated at 1 to 5 million dollars, but he divested his holdings in April 2017 as required by his role as White House Chief Strategist.[50] In March 2018, Jennifer Mercer and Rebekah Mercer became directors of Emerdata limited.[51] In March 2018 it became public by Christopher Wylie, that Cambridge Analytica's first activities were founded on a data set, which its parent company SCL bought 2014 from a company named Global Science Research founded by Aleksandr Kogan and his team present across the world [52] who worked as a psychologist at Cambridge. Dr Emma Briant published evidence through the British Parliament's Fake News Inquiry indicating that Cambridge Analytica did work for the UK's LeaveEU Brexit campaign during the 2016 EU Referendum which they denied.[53] The Information Commissioner's Office in February 2019 decided to audit the campaign, and its funder Arron Banks company Eldon Insurance for unlawful marketing involving repurposing of data.[54] In November 2020 the Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham MP wrote that she "found no further evidence to change [her] earlier view that SCL/CA were not involved in the EU referendum campaign in the U.K." Denham also said she found no evidence of Russian involvement in the referendum.[55] During Boris Johnson's tenure as foreign secretary, the Foreign Office sought advice from Cambridge Analytica[56] and Boris Johnson had a meeting with Alexander Nix in 2016.[56][57]

The Nix and Ashburner Nix family, of London and Crawley, is an English banking family that became part of the landed gentry in the 19th century, with their family estate Tilgate House in Crawley. Members have been notable as bankers in the City of London, notably as partners in the London bank Fuller, Banbury, Nix & Co, and as large estate owners in Crawley and public officials in Sussex, where John Ashburner Nix served as High Sheriff in 1911. The family had ties to British colonial history, especially Colonial India in the 19th century, and inherited a significant part of their wealth from George Ashburner, a businessman born in India. More recently, family member Alexander Nix became known as CEO of Cambridge Analytica. The family is included as "Nix of Tilgate" in Burke's Landed Gentry.[1]

History

The family is descended from the leather cutter John Parfitt Nix (died 1802) of Tower Dock in the City of London.[2] He was the father of John Nix (1791–1873), whose sons John Hennings Nix and Edward Winkelmann Nix were partners in the London private bank Fuller, Banbury, Nix & Co.[3]

In 1865 John Hennings Nix married Sarah Ashburner (born 1845 in Calcutta), daughter of the wealthy Indian-born businessman George Ashburner (1810–1869);[4] the Ashburner family had long-standing ties to India dating back to the East India Company's rule from the mid 18th century. John Hennings Nix acquired Tilgate House, a 2,185-acre estate in Crawley, from his father-in-law and built a new French-style great house in the 1860s.[5] The staff working on the estate counted some 150 people. In 1904, the estate went to their son John Ashburner Nix, who served as High Sheriff of Sussex in 1911[6] and who died in 1927. The estate then passed to his brother Charles George Ashburner Nix who, on the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, put it up for auction.[7] Charles George Ashburner Nix won a silver medal at the 1908 Summer Olympics in London; he was married to Mildred, the daughter of James Clifton Brown and Amelia Rowe; the latter's father Charles was a free person of colour born out of wedlock in Jamaica to the "free Quadroon" Mary Gauntlett and the slave owner Charles Rowe, Sr., making him an "Octoroon" in the parlance of the time.

The sister of John and Charles Nix, Caroline Ashburner Nix (1869–1944), married Luigi Casimiro di Rovasenda, an Italian count, with noble descendants in Italy.

Charles George Ashburner Nix was the grandfather of the investment banker Paul David Ashburner Nix, who was one of the shareholders of SCL Group. The latter's son is Alexander James Ashburner Nix, a long-time director of SCL Group and former CEO of Cambridge Analytica, who is married to Olympia Paus, one of the heirs to the Norwegian shipping company Wilh. Wilhelmsen.[8]

Setting Sons is a 1979 album by British band The Jam, their fourth since their debut in 1977. It reached No. 4 in the UK Albums Chart upon the first week of release,[2] continuing the commercial (and critical) favour that had begun with their previous album All Mod Cons.[3]

The sole single from Setting Sons, "The Eton Rifles", became the group's first top 10 UK hit, peaking at No. 3.[3]

The Setting Sun (斜陽, Shayō) is a Japanese novel by Osamu Dazai. It was published in 1947 and is set in Japan after World War II. Principal characters are Kazuko, her brother Naoji, and their elderly mother. The story shows a family in decline and crisis, like many other families during this period of transition between traditional Japan and a more advanced, industrial society.[citation needed] Many families needed to leave their old lives behind and start anew. Throughout the story, mostly through the character Naoji, the author brings up a number of social and philosophical problems of that time period.

The novel was adapted into a film, also called The Setting Sun, which was released by Kaerucafe on June 13, 2009. Directed by Masatoshi Akihara and with a screenplay by Yukie Ochiai, the film starred Eriko Sato as Kazuko. Other cast members included Yōichi Nukumizu, Yosuke Ito, Sera Rinka, Kota Masago, Ichiro Ogura, and Hitomi Takahashi as the mother.[1][2][3] The novel has been translated into English by Donald Keene.

As of January 1, 2019, the book is in the public domain

https://bunshun.jp/articles/-/42790
