Georgetown Law student among the victims in Ethiopian plane crash

One of the 157 victims killed Sunday in the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines plane bound for Nairobi was Cedric Asiavugwa, a third-year law school student at Georgetown University in Washington.
University officials announced his death Sunday evening, describing Asiavugwa, 32, as a member of the campus ministry and a residential minister with a history of work to better other people’s lives.

Pius Adesanmi (died 10 March 2019) was a Nigerian-born Canadian professor, writer, literary critic, satirist, and columnist. He is the author of Naija No Dey Carry Last, a collection of satirical essays. Adesanmi died on 10 March 2019, when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after take-off.
Biography and careerAdesanmi was born in Isanlu, in Yagba East Local Government area of Kogi State, Nigeria.[1] He had a BA (first class honours) from the University of Ilorin in 1992, a Masters in French from the University of Ibadan in 1998, and a PhD in French Studies from the University of British Columbia in 2002.
From 2002 to 2005, he was Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature at the Pennsylvania State University, USA. In 2006, he joined Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada as a Professor of literature and African studies.[2] He has also been a Fellow of the French Institute for Research in Africa (IFRA) from 1993 to 1997, as well as of the French Institute of South Africa (IFAS) in 1998 and 2000[3]For many years, Adesanmi was a regular columnist for Premium Times and Sahara Reporters. His writings were often satiric, focusing on the absurd in the Nigerian social and political system. His targets often included politicians, pastors, and other relevant public figures. In September 2015, his scathing column on the decision of the Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, to take an underage wife generated substantial conversation on the matter,[4] and even got the response of the Emir who responded to Adesanmi by name.[5]In 2015, he gave a TED talk titled "Africa is the forward that the world needs to face".[6]Adesanmi died on 10 March 2019, when Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 crashed shortly after take-off.[7][8] The plane was flying from Addis Ababa to Nairobi.

Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab (Arabic: عمر فاروق عبد المطلب ; also known as Umar Abdul Mutallab and Omar Farooq al-Nigeri; born December 22, 1986)[3][4] popularly referred to as the "Underwear Bomber", is a Nigerian man who, at the age of 23, confessed to and was convicted of attempting to detonate plastic explosives hidden in his underwear while on board Northwest Airlines Flight 253, en route from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, on Christmas Day, 2009.[1][4][5]Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) claimed to have organised the attack with Abdulmutallab; they said they supplied him with the bomb and trained him. Connections to al-Qaeda and Anwar al-Awlaki have been found, although the latter denied ordering the man to do the bombing.
Abdulmutallab was convicted in a U.S. federal court of eight federal criminal counts, including attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted murder of 289 people. On February 16, 2012, he was sentenced to 4 life terms plus 50 years without parole.[6] He is incarcerated at ADX Florence, the supermax federal prison in Colorado.

Hospitality company Tamarind Group announced 'with immense shock and grief' that its chief executive Jonathan Seex was among the fatalities.
Anton Hrnko, an MP for the nationalist Slovak National Party, said he was 'in deep grief' to announce that his wife Blanka, daughter Michala and son Martin were among the dead.
Three members of Italian aid group Africa Tremila were on board. The group's president Carlo Spini, his wife Gabriella Viggiani, and treasurer Matteo Ravasio were among the eight Italians killed.
The African Diaspora Youth Forum in Europe said co-chairman Karim Saafi had been a passenger on the flight and had been due to represent them at a meeting with the African Union in Nairobi.
Professor Pius Adesamni was named as a victim by Benoit-Antoine Bacon, the president and vice-chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
Hussein Swaleh, the former secretary general of the Football Kenya Federation, was named as being among the dead by Sofapaka Football Club.
Abiodun Oluremi Bashua - a retired envoy who served in Iran, Austria and Ivory Coast - was killed, Nigeria's foreign affairs ministry said.
Austrian media reported that three doctors who were aged between 30 and 40 and worked at hospitals in Linz had died.
Save the Children said its child protection in emergencies adviser Tamirat Mulu Demessie was among the dead.
Three of the Russians on board were tourists Yekaterina Polyakova, Alexander Polyakov and Sergei Vyalikov, the Russian Embassy in Ethiopia said.
