Hillary Diane Rodham was born on October 26, 1947, at Edgewater Medical Center in Chicago, Illinois.^[5][6] She was raised in a United Methodist family that first lived in Chicago. Dans son autobiographie Living History, Hillary Clinton évoque les origines « franco-canadiennes, écossaises et françaises » de sa grand-mère maternelle, Della Murray. La famille de cette dernière était originaire de Nouvelle-France^2,3. Son arrière-arrière-grand-père Antoine Martin est par ailleurs né en France vers 1815, et a émigré de France en Haut-Canada (aujourd'hui Ontario) avant 1840. Elle grandit à Park Ridge, dans la banlieue de Chicago. Elle est notamment camarade du chanteur Steve Goodman. Sportive, méthodiste fervente, elle est une élève assidue, ce qui la conduit à être élue au conseil de classe⁴. Ses parents l’encouragent par ailleurs à étudier sérieusement afin de réussir et de choisir la carrière qui l’intéresse⁵. En 1962, Don Jones, son pasteur méthodiste, l'éveille au mouvement des droits civiques⁶ et lui offre l'occasion de voir Martin Luther King Jr. lors d'un discours à Chicago.
