North South University (Bengali: নর্থসাউথ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) or NSU is the first private university of Bangladesh.[2] The government of Bangladesh approved the establishment of North South University in 1992 under the Private University Act (PUA) 1992 (now replaced by PUA 2010). The university was formally inaugurated on February 10, 1993 by the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
NSU has the authority, under its Charter, to impart instruction and confer undergraduate and graduate degrees in all branches of arts, business and sciences, including engineering, agriculture, law and medicine. It also has the authority to grant diplomas, certificates and other academic distinctions. Currently, NSU offers bachelor's and master's degrees in 29 subjects (15 bachelor's degrees and 14 master's degrees). Additional programs including PhD in different subjects are under preparation. The Board of Trustees include notable industrialists: M.A. Kashem (current Chairman), Azim Uddin Ahmed, M.A. Hashem, Ragib Ali, Iftekharul Alam, M.A. Awal, Abul Kashem, A.S.F Rahman and Rehana Rahman amongst others.

The university's campus is at Bashundhara in Dhaka. The foundation of the campus was laid on January 30, 2003 by Begum Khaleda Zia.[3]

Birthday controversy

Khaleda Zia claims 15 August as her birthday, which is a matter of controversy in Bangladesh politics.[48][49] 15 August is the day many immediate family members of Zia's political rival, Sheikh Hasina, including her father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman were killed. As a result of the deaths, 15 August is officially declared National Mourning Day of Bangladesh.[48][50][51] None of Zias government issued identification documents show her birthday on 15 August.[50][52] Her matriculation examination certificate lists a birth date of 9 August 1945. Her marriage certificate lists 5 September 1945. Zia's passport indicates a birth date of 19 August 1945.[50][52] Kader Siddiqui, a political ally of Khaleda urged her not to celebrate her birthday on 15 August.[49] The High Court filed a petition against Khaleda Zia on this issue.[53][54]

Monash University was created by an Act of the State Parliament of Victoria in 1958 as a result of the Murray Report, which was commissioned in 1957 by then Prime Minister Robert Menzies to establish the second university in the state of Victoria. The university was named after the prominent Australian general Sir John Monash. This was the first university in Australia to be named after a person, rather than a city, region or state.[18]

John Monash

Monash was born in Dudley Street,[2] West Melbourne, Victoria, on 27 June 1865, the son of Louis Monash and his wife Bertha, née Manasse.[3] He was born to Jewish parents, both from Germany (the family name was originally spelt Monasch and pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable[citation needed]), living in Krotoschin in the Kingdom of Prussia, now Krotoszyn in the Greater Poland Voivodeship, Poland.[clarification needed][4] The family spoke German as their native language, and some sources describe them as being of German origin.[5] From 1914 until his death, Sir John Monash had no good reason to attract attention to his German background. His parents' original home was close to where the German general Erich Ludendorff was born. As might have been expected from a man brought up by cultivated German parents who had arrived in Australia barely two years before John's birth, Monash spoke, read, and wrote German fluently.[6]
