Scientists studying the DNA of Richard III have discovered that modern relatives share a different genetic code suggesting that he or other members of his family were illegitimate.
Because the King had no children, geneticists were forced to trace the descendants of his great great great grandfather, Edward III.
Y chromosomes are passed on from father to son, so Richard would have inherited Edward's, as would his modern day descendants.
However scientists discovered that Edward's descendants do not share the same Y chromosome as Richard,
It means that Richard may not have the royal bloodline, and, therefore no right to the throne. Equally later Kings may not have been from royal blood.
Geneticist Dr Turi King added: “The fact that we do not find a match between the living male-line relatives and the skeletal remains is not at all surprising to me. We knew from work that I, and others, have carried out in the past that the incidence of false-paternity, where the biological father is not the supposed father, is historically in the region of 1-2 per cent per generation.
"Even using a conservative rate, we knew there was a ~16 per cent chance of finding there would be a false-paternity in this chain.”
The study is published in the journal Nature Communications.

DNA analysis of the descendants of Henry Somerset, 5th Duke of Beaufort has suggested that at some point between Edward III, who died in 1377, and the 5th Duke of Beaufort, who died in 1803, there was a break in the male lineage as the wives of one of the men listed above were unfaithful to them. If that occurred before Edmund, the 2nd Duke of Somerset, who was born in 1406, then it could call in to question the Tudors claim to the throne, and so the current Royal family whose lineage is traced back to the Tudors through Henry VI. However, the break could also have occurred on the York side of the family tree and so Richard III's claim could also have been illegitimate
