So often in life our value and our worth comes from what we do, how busy we are, how much we serve, what our planners are filled with, how much we give back. None of these things should be the basis for your worth. You have worth and value simply by being you, not who you want to be or who people tell you you should be or even who you think you should be, you are precious by just being you.

I’m terrible at saying no, I haven’t always been bad at it. For a while I was very good at saying no and getting my priorities right and not people pleasing but recently (since moving back home, coincidence?) I have found saying no incredibly difficult and I know that I definitely had too much on my plate. Between studying, teaching practice, small group, leading youth, squeezing in time for family and friends, I had nothing left for myself, let alone God. From about the end of October to Christmas I felt like I was in a state of permanent exhaustion where evenings and weekends were never long enough to get everything I needed to done and catch up on sleep. (I cannot function anywhere near normal without at least 7 hours shut eye a night.)

My grandmother, who is a very wise lady, always says that you can’t pour from an empty teapot, no matter how much you tip and try, if a teapot is empty nothing will come from it. How similar is that to our lives? We can’t produce anything if we’re low on fuel ourselves. Teapots need to be refilled from time to time with a teabag and boiling water. How many of us need to be refilled and be heated up so that we’re passionate about things and not just being lukewarm about life?
