The Queen: The Emperor and Empress who are getting THE BUS to funeral
Japanese Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako are expected to board a shuttle bus to the Queen’s funeral
As world leaders continue to arrive in the UK ahead of the Queen’s funeral on Monday, few are flying in further than the Emperor and Empress of Japan. The Japanese leaders were seen boarding a first class flight to London in the morning.
Emperor Naruhito's wife, Empress Masako, will also be making a rare public appearance as she has generally kept out of the public eye for the last 20 years. It’ll be their first visit to the UK since they ascended the throne in 2019.
Once in London, the Emperor and Empress will swap their luxury plane to join other royal dignitaries on a shuttle bus that will transport them to the Queen’s funeral.
Politico reported the 62-year-old Emperor will be sharing the shuttle with Belgium's King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, Spain's King Felipe and Queen Letizia, Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia and the Netherlands' King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.
King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway, Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene of Monaco, and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark are also believed to be on their way to the funeral, but it is unclear whether they’ll be on the shuttle.
In terms of political leaders, US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Canada's Justin Trudeau and Australia's Anthony Albanese will also be in attendance.
Leaders from Lithuania, Latvia, Trinidad and Tobago, Palestine, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Moldova, Germany, South Korea, Brazil, Poland, Italy, Finland, Hungary, Jamaica, Belize, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Bangladesh, India and Austria have also been invited.
The Queen passed away on September 8 at her residence in Balmoral Castle. At 96-year-old, she was the country’s longest-reigning monarch, having worn the crown for over 70 years.
