　英国統治下の香港（Hong Kong）で最後の総督を務めたクリス・パッテン（Chris Patten）氏は25日、香港の中国からの独立を求める動きを非難した。香港では、中国政府による締め付けが強まっているとの懸念から独立を求める動きが続いている。

香港の外国特派員協会で記者会見したパッテン氏は、香港における民主主義の強化については完全に支持していると述べたが、独立を求める活動家たちについては、この問題に関して「茶番を演じている」と非難した。

パッテン氏は1997年、50年間は自由を保障する一国二制度の下で香港が中国に返還された際に総督を務めていた。ただ香港では現在、自由が脅かされているとの懸念が広がっている。

同氏は、香港における法の支配と自由に強い信頼を置いていると話す一方、独立支持派については世間の注目を集めるための「ばかげた行動」に訴えているとして一蹴。

「私のような人間が、民主主義と香港の独立に関する議論を混同することは不誠実で不名誉であり、無責任なことだ」と語った。

さらに、独立は決して起きるものではないと述べるとともに、独立を求める運動は民主主義への支持を弱めているとし、「宣誓はふざけて行うことではない」と付け加えた。(c)AFP

Boris Johnson does not seem to understand "the difference between fact and fiction", former Tory chairman Lord Patten has told BBC Newsnight.

Lord Patten, who supports the UK remaining in the EU, said Mr Johnson, a prominent Leave campaigner, "just makes it up as he goes along".

Patten is a Roman Catholic and oversaw Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the United Kingdom in September 2010. In 2010, The Tablet named him as one of Britain’s most influential Roman Catholics.^[23]In 2014 Pope Francis appointed Patten to head a body to advise the Vatican on media strategy and on how to handle the press.

Patten was Chancellor of Newcastle University from 1999 to 2009, and was elected Chancellor of the University of Oxford in 2003. In 2016, in the wake of a student movement to remove the statue of Cecil Rhodes from a College in Oxford, as had happened in South Africa, Patten said that Oxford students who didn't like Cecil Rhodes should "think about being educated elsewhere".^[14]On 11 January 2005 Patten was created a life peer as Baron Patten of Barnes, of Barnes in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames.^[15]
